Welcome to the Mayo GAA discussion thread - Chapter 3, yer trotting them out quicker than a Mills & Boon Romance !.

This is one of the most active forums on Boards.ie. As a result, discussion can get quite heated. But there are certain things posters must realise are simply not OK to post:

- Personal abuse

- Rumours about players'/managers'/anyone's personal lives.

- Trolling.

- Accusations of trolling. Report a post if you suspect it to be trolling.

I hope the GAA make an example of Costello. On a par with the Keegan incident imo. Sportsmanship like this should have no part in the game. The GAA need to send out a strong message.

This is all very childish. Both were wrong. Trying to claim moral victories over who was 'wronger' is silly.

Two wrongs don't make a right. Punish both and move on.

That's a pretty ridiculous analogy to be fair.
Just admit Costello was trying to slow the kickout down. Was it unsportsmanlike? Yes. Was what Keegan did unsportsmanlike? Yes. Most Mayo fans will admit that I feel. Is either issue a big deal? No.
You'd swear Keegan threw a severed head at Rock the way some Dublin "pundits" and posters are going on.

Keegan may have inadvertently corrected some terrible miscalculation that Rock was about to make.....

Keegan’s GPS may have won the All-Ireland for Dublin .

Agreed.
Personally, I think the EOG thing is worse than both. If a player bumped into him while he had his finger in boyles eye he could have done permanent damage.

Laughable!

Dubliners all over the media and on here all week saying Keegan should be harshly punished.
When the Costello incident is pointed out, suddenly they back track and say both should be treated lightly, its childish to say one was worse than the other, etc etc.

At least people are backing off on Keegan now which is good to see.

Yes its time to move on, I've argued that already. Let the CCCC deal with both players. Both were on an equal footing in my book.

Why didn't mayo get a free for the kilkenny black card. Surely they were fouling the players.

Secondly where was the extra man for mayo after Dublin got the black card.

Man, I've seen it all now. One of the best games of modern times, played by two of the best teams and some keyboard warrior slags a player cause he cried after losing his 4th All Ireland.

This is passion and Keegan has everything (skill, drive, commitment, power, pace, team player, leadership etc) in abundance.. clearly you know nothing about any of this!!

Anyway, on a more positive note, apparently Kim Jong Un went to a Mayo gaeltacht in his early years and since then has informed his people every September that Mayo have won every single All Ireland since by 50 points.

Of the mayo subs how many would start next year? Have one orvtwo experienced on the bench?

For 2018, retirement permitting, Andy, Boyler & SOS should be guys who start on the bench and provide the impetus that's needed to close out a game.
The AI to my mind was lost because the squad depth wasn't reinforced through the year and that's a real concern. Nally, Boland & Regan to mention a few must not have made the improvement required to push for starting places. These guys as well as the other extended squad members should be afforded as much game time in 2018 to see if they have what it takes.

You could have a similar team next year with

Diarmuid on, Boyle impact
Coen on, Seamie or Vaughan impact
Loftus on, Andy impact.

I would be comfortable enough with the first two but Loftus would need to step up a fair bit.

Colm Boyle has been playing inter-county now for the guts of 10 years faik, and while for whatever reason wasn`t deemed by management fit to play more than 55 mins in any game this years.
When on the pitch I thought him one of Mayo`s most consistent performers with Mayo`s preformances often dipping when he was called ashore.
Along with what he brings to Mayo going forward, he is a teak tough centre back who tackles hard without conceding frees.
I just do not see Diarmuid O Connor having what is needed for centre back.
If it was me, I would be more inclined to sort whatever problems Boyle may have, give him plenty of rest, and have him at his best for the championship

Andy has to start surely, player of the year aside this year must have confirmed that he is a starter not a sub and that he is definitely Mayo's best forward.

Boyle couldn't finish games due to health issues. I doubt he or management could have helped that.

O Connor is a forward. Coen is more likely to fill in at half back in the next few years.

It appeared obvious that Boyle had health problems this year, but if I was Mayo management I would make every effort possible to sort them prior to next years championship.
As I said earlier, I just cannot see O Connor filling the centre-back position with anything like the same authority that Boyle brings.

We broke away from our norm and played 7 defenders (Durcan coming in for DO'C) against Dublin. So that switch of Boyle to DO'C sees DO'C as wing forward not CB.

He was one of our best performers this year but I think we'll have to have faith in the management when they say he can only do X km..minutes... It's on medical device afaik.

The reality is that if he's struggling this year, and at his age, he probably won't bounce back next year. It's likely he'll could deteriorate. I would save him and get another year or two out of him as an impact sub if that was the case.

(I'm not calling for him to be dropped btw. A question was asked: who from the bench could start next year and who might they replace)
