Mayo GAA Discussion - Part 3

Welcome to the Mayo GAA discussion thread - Chapter 3, yer trotting them out quicker than a Mills & Boon Romance !.

This is one of the most active forums on Boards.ie. As a result, discussion can get quite heated. But there are certain things posters must realise are simply not OK to post:

- Personal abuse

- Rumours about players'/managers'/anyone's personal lives.

- Trolling.

- Accusations of trolling. Report a post if you suspect it to be trolling.

Well theres something amiss with poor Charlie in preventing him from enjoying dubs 3 in a row. We witnessed a top class game on Sunday, and the one thing Redmond wanted to write about was an indicident that had no bearing on the game. You'd swear he was a beacon of sportsmanship himself from his playing days.

I never really understand why in GAA playing 10 games over 4 or 5 months is considered a huge amount of fixtures, and why teams need 4 weeks to "build up" for a big game, when every other sport you just play every week for the whole season.

There is a difference between professionals and amateurs.

GAA players have to go back to work after matches.

If they adopt the training and build in appropriate rest, there's no reason why players shouldn't be able to play every 7 days.

Players then give out that there isn't enough games.

The problem with charlie was he never knew when it was time to fook off.

charlie has had something against a lot of Mayo people given his past comments on COC, McStay and don't forget how much of a fan of McGuinnes he is.

Maybe he believes someone from Mayo nicked his medal.

I would have 2 that I think will step down or should step down. I've massive respect for both:
Dillon has given so much at this stage and I think it would be the right time, given his age. I can't see anything bar a specialist role for Barry Moran in the future. I think he'll step down as well.

Apart from those two, I would hope that all the other elder players (most of them starters) will hang around for another year or two. We need them to.

Absolutely. A sub sent on not to play football, but to smash kickout tees and fight with defenders. Now that is a new low. Was Clarke's last kickout affected by his behaviour?

It was a terrible throw, wrong side of the ball. You need to be getting it right beside his foot just as he's about to kick it.

I assume that the effect on Clarke's kickout was similar to the effect of Keegan's messing was on Rock's free.

The difference might well be that there was a lot of antics - waving of hands, walking by and chatting (well I assume it was friendly chat), standing less than ten yards away etc. - when Rock was taking his earlier frees so he may well have been able to zone it out by then.

Maybe the lesson to be learned is that if you are going to be cynical and target an opposition player's kicks, be selective for better effect.

Yes, if you look at Dublin's reaction after the point was scored, it was obviously a natural reaction to something they all saw, and it clearly wasn't a deliberate and very cynical tactic to drag every opponent down and/or thump them at all at all...:D

It would have been interesting if McQuillan had black carded the 3/4 Dublin players that dragged their men down and not just Kilkenny. 14 v 10 for the last minute. One attack.

Pity it isn't the "done thing".

Just saw the video of this. In no way is it worse than what Keegan did. I presumed he threw the tee away as Clarke was about to take the kick out but he does it before Rock has even taken the free.

In fact I would go as far as to say Costello was right to throw Clarke's tee off the pitch. Clarke shouldn't have his tee on the 14 yard line in the first place as the ball is still in open play while Rock still has to take his free. If that ball comes back off the post into the goal area a player from either team could easily trip or roll their ankle on it.

Throwing away the other tees that Clarke had behind the goal was bad form and I wouldn't condone it however it made no difference to the restart as Clarke has retrieved one of the tees before Rock has kicked the winning point.

In what way is it strange?

Clarke shouldn't have a tee on the pitch until the ball goes out of play. It's quite simple.

Clarke has retrieved a tee that Costelloe has thrown before Rock takes the free therefore his restart wasn't affected.

The only strange analysis is claiming what Costelloe did was worse than Keegan

Exactly, sure Redmond is someone who trades his reputation on the fact he was sent off in an All Ireland final yet didn't leave the pitch, all a great laugh sure (instead of trading on a reputation of being a very good consistent scoring forward and free taker).
