Thought I'd update the OP with links and stuff for anyone who stumbles across this.

The former Off the Ball hosts have partnered with The Irish Times to do a series of weekly podcasts. They go online each Tuesday and cover a variety of sports, with a number of contributors including Sid Lowe, Richie Sadlier, Gerry Thornley and Shane Horgan.

Thought The Fairview today was hilarious, one of the highlights of The World Service so far.

I'll be honest as an All-Ireland preview it really didn't do it for me. Thought 25 minutes (guessing intro 10 minutes roughly, conclusion Fairview etc 5 minutes) was just to short and it really ends up being a conversation lacking major depth. GAA has moved on, and there's a lot to discuss around the final. Listening to the GAA Hour and they've had a decent discussion of the press nights in both counties, the ticket sales approaches by both counties and Gooch's testimonial by 36 minutes. I know I'm not comparing like with like, but I think the lads are probably spread a bit thin.

On a more general point, does anyone know why the shows are so short? I might sound ignorant but just wondering if anyone has any ideas re: production costs per minute for such a show. I'm sure there's industry standards.

Yeah the shows have defo got shorter recently with more players chairs which were supposed to be once a month. Maybe they're busy creating some other future content?

I would guess it is just done to not wanting to just have filler. No point having hour long shows for the sake of it.

Are you surprised? SC's GAA coverage needs a serious overhaul. I've given up counting the amount of stupid points Murph and Oisin raise.

What happened to doing shows about slightly out of the mainstream stuff? There was one about a rower or something then...have I missed some?

One thing that annoyed me recently, but then didn't, was their use of a guest who appeared everywhere. Cormac Mcanallen's brother was plugging his book on Sean O'Rourke, OTB, The Last Word and the Second Captains, all in the same day. I heard all of the SOR interview, snippets of the Last Word discussion and all of the Second Captains (which I heard last).

When I heard they were interviewing him I nearly didn't bother, having heard the same thing twice already, but it really showed Eoin's skill as interviewer, quite a different interview to the SOR one, they went into areas that the others hadn't. Was interesting enough, and a good insight into the different approach of Eoin McDevitt as an interviewer.

It's usually just lads trying painfully hard to prove how "mad" they are, it's no loss.

Fairview was pure gold, Ken's attempt at a Mayo accent was the highlight, it's the type of thing that sets them apart from other sport shows.

I imagine it's cause he probably has to do most of his own research - I assume the other interviews were only ten mins long.

Have to say I'd gone off the GAA in recent years but listening to Second Captains has got me right back into it. Also really enjoy the various snippets about US sports. The chap who planted the flag at his rivals ground sounds like a right laugh, must look up the video.
