Our telephone line comes in under the gable of our bungalow - nowhere near the meter box. Maybe our house is just older or something? As I said before, not a baldy notion how this stuff happens on the ground.

It would seem to me that those pics are in the wrong thread as apparently that is a Siro install and not an eir fibre install.

For those who had a failed installation which required further work by KN, once the work was complete did Eir automatically arrange a new installation date? Got my work done on Thursday but no word from Eir yet.

It is most likely the ETU for the phone line. Most newer builds would have them adjacent to the electricity meter box. I assume some or all of snowstreams line comes in underground to the ETU. Although I am unsure why the installer did not route the fibre through the back of the ETU as the phone line would enter the premises this way.

thats what i thought when i saw the pics . why didnt they go through the back of the box next to the existing phone line .
or even drill through the back of it ..

my phone box is just above ground level ,
the meter box is about at 1.5 m

Seems you are likely correct ...... on closer examination of the pics the box does look a bit smaller than an Electricity Meter box and is low down near the plinth.

Hi sorry for confusion. It is an eir install. That's my ETU box alright as navi said. The duct came in underground to that point and shouldn't have come out of the box at all. But the duct from the etu to the inside of the house was blocked. So kn had to drill a separate hole beside it.

I measured the cable going into my neighbours houes, 6mm diameter, which I guess means a 60mm min bend radius is acceptable.

I don't know if they may or may not be using different diameter cables from different vendors in different locations.

Would he not drill the seperate hole through the back of the box? It looks to me from the picture that he drilled from inside of the house outwards, my prep work will need him to drill from the outside in, through the back of a smallish IP rated box, if he insists on drilling from inside then he will most likely miss the box.

Well, bit the bullet and signed up for 150Mbps + Phone bundle. But the price advertised for new customers is not correct, I was told. Is now €40 p.m. (not 35) for six months then €70 p.m.

No problems with availability check even though landline says it's not available while eircode does. I shouldn't have a problem when installer turns up, they installed it to neighbour from same pole.

So, blocked duct from pole sorted by putting new inspection hole in footpath and cutting opening in duct, (that took some digging of the lawn to find the duct, first guess was good but I didn't dig deep enough! Dug about ten feet of trench before I went back to start and dug a little deeper! I suppose the exercise was good for me.) Some 25x40mm trunking on the plinth, then a plastic pipe up through the external wall insulation, behind the render to a 100x100mm IP65 box recessed into the wall about 50cm above the footpath. So there should be no cable visable on the house

The installer will be able to drill through this into a bedroom close to a power socket, from there I will run cat5e into the attic to my switch which already has cat5 running to my existing modem and tv locations.

Lets hope it all goes to plan.

Until such time as they roll out their VOBB, that is the case.

I didn't get a copper line in at all and they gave me a voip phone number instead. It's an 076 region code though so maybe you can't move your existing phone numbers into voip yet.

You could have ported your number to another VOIP service before you lost it.

That would have been nice alright. But I lost my number nearly 4 years ago so I had to get a new one. Eir said they couldn't offer a Galway number only the 076 region one. People will get used to it over time I hope!

You should be aware that 076 numbers are not allowed in most call packages, thus they can cost the caller quite a bit.

There are other providers which can supply you with a geographical number if eir claim they cannot.

KN use two types of cable for FTTH installs.

From what I was told by KN technician the type in the photos above is for overhead install.

The other type is an c.8mm round cable used for underground installs through ducting.

During my install the KN guy started pulling the twin type cable above through underground duct but stopped and said he was pulling the wrong type and changed to 8mm round type.

That said they were going to pull the twin type during the first failed install

Fibre Reality:

Eir salesman called to house to sell me Fibre Broadband. Assured me that fibre was live in area.
I checked Eir website. Says 1000Mb Fibre is available to me.
I agree contract. Get contract email. I am overcharged. Adam quickly sorts this for me….good man.
I get email confirming 4th August as installation date.
This morning I get telephone call from gentleman to say technician will be with me tomorrow and tech would text me half hour before calling. All very efficient.
All ready for tomorrow.

Got a call at 6pm this evening from KN to say that they would not be calling tomorrow as fibre does not exist at my location.
Was I surprised…..not really.
This is Eir I am dealing with

Get real: Fibre with Eir is Like the Tooth Fairy, Leprechauns or Shangri La: IT DOES NOT EXIST.
Eir are a crowd of chancers and are selling a product they do not have.

If they get any part of NBP then this country is fcuked.

Eir must be stopped from advertising a product that they cannot supply.
I will try and correct this part of their sales pitch.

Today Tuesday 8th August.....Guess what.....just got my Eir bill....THEY HAVE CHARGED ME FOR THE FIBRE THEY COULD NOT INSTALL.

I have been lurking on this thread for a few weeks since i was due for install last week, which was moved to today but OpenEir called this morning to say the wiring isn't done right (girl on the phone didn't really understand what the problem was just that there is a problem). was told to call Eir wholesalers and they said will probably be another month before it's actually available.

Thanks to this thread i wasn't too surprised to hear of some reason as to why FTTH install would be delayed. while i was on the phone to support i asked if many had similar issues and she told me about 5-6 people she dealt with today have had some problem with a delayed FTTH install.

yeah i know, but the discount i got is like 10euro cheaper than what i pay right now, so i'm just gonna let it run. I think after 6 months, the price jumps a bit but by then I 'should' have FTTH.

Weekly ritual of slapping my eircode into the FTTH checker and lo and behold today I got the "fibre with speeds of 1000 blah blah available at blah blah". I'm not rushing into placing an order because of the stories on here. The exchange is partially live and the nearest pole to me just has coiled fibre coming out of the base. Not a splice box to be seen.

I went on to Eirs live chat, for a laugh. A lovely Indian man told me that indeed FTTH was available and my installation date would be 6/9/17.

It's crazy that somebody has checked a box somwhere and is letting people place orders that they know can't be fulfilled. Looking at my area (headford, Kerry) October would be good guess and even then that's being optimistic.

Eir. Slimy and so hard to deal with. Why do they make it so hard?

My ethernet switch, I currently have cat5 cable running from my adsl modem up to an ethernet switch in the attic, there are also wifi extenders and a TV and Freesat boxes connected to this switch.

My new configuration will have the ethernet switch between the ONT and the new fibre modem/router. I believe this should work, the switch should be invisible to the network.
