The Cush

An update on my area, Murroe Co. Limerick, which is scheduled to go live this Autumn.

For the last week or so lads from Networx Cable And Civils (wearing KN hi-viz vests

) running ducting from the exchange to the poles at the start of the rural fibre routes.

Pole replacement underway (slowly) since May, at a rate of 3-4 poles per visit, 1-2 visits per fortnight. I assume they're working on other areas also. Hedge cutting done last Feb.

I think it was mentioned before but I can't find it now. Can anyone advise on the diameter of the fibre line that is run from the splice box to the house? I need to run a new duct that is capable of holding 3 fibre lines on a private lane.
Openeir told me to contact Eir. Eir told me the technician I get will "be able to advise me".

A 32 or 37mm thick walled polyethylene or 50mm PVC is recommended for the duct.

Fibre Reality:

Eir salesman called to house to sell me Fibre Broadband. Assured me that fibre was live in area.
I checked Eir website. Says 1000Mb Fibre is available to me.
I agree contract. Get contract email. I am overcharged. Adam quickly sorts this for me….good man.
I get email confirming 4th August as installation date.
This morning I get telephone call from gentleman to say technician will be with me tomorrow and tech would text me half hour before calling. All very efficient.
All ready for tomorrow.

Got a call at 6pm this evening from KN to say that they would not be calling tomorrow as fibre does not exist at my location.
Was I surprised…..not really.
This is Eir I am dealing with

Get real: Fibre with Eir is Like the Tooth Fairy, Leprechauns or Shangri La: IT DOES NOT EXIST.
Eir are a crowd of chancers and are selling a product they do not have.

If they get any part of NBP then this country is fcuked.

Eir must be stopped from advertising a product that they cannot supply.
I will try and correct this part of their sales pitch.

I think it's a bit unfair to blame the customer in this instance. They are caught between two arm of eir and should not be exposed to such incompetence.

I wonder though is there something more sinister at play here. The Department still have not publicly confirmed the Q2 numbers for the rural rollout. Have Openeir released bogus APQ files to retail operators, with premises qualifying that have not been fully passed, in an effort to meet deadlines for their contract with the government?

Is it not more likely that eir retail are the culprits ....... through incompetence or design?

Openeir seem to be providing accurate information to those who contact them ..... that is my impression from posts here.

Possibly but as far as I am aware all the retail operators, including eir retail, get their live premises in weekly prequal files from Openeir. Unless something is going badly wrong in eir retail I'm not sure how they could be selling to houses that are not live.

garroff as a test could you go through the order process with Digiweb and Pure Telecom and see if they also say your premises is live? If it is not too much trouble of course.

Pure Telecom checked their list and confirmed it was live.

It's not only an Eir salesman who told me that I can get FTTH - it's on the Eir site and on the OpenEir map and I've had it 'confirmed' by ringing Pure and Digiweb. All of them tell me I'm good to go and let me take your order!

If it wasn't for this thread and Boards in general, I'd have absolutely no idea what should or shouldn't be available or even what a pole with fibre/splice boxes on it looks like! I'm pretty sure I'm not unusual there.

I tried to order today, splice box was fitted yesterday, tech advised me it would be 2 weeks before live but i was getting the passes on the Eir site for both phone and eircode.

My bill was issued yesterday, i am aready a customer, saw it online through myeir site, the actual bill has not dropped through the letterbox yet.

Sales wouldent take an order because the bill was outstanding, due date is Aug15 :rolleyes:

Fine, ill pay online now and call back Tuesday. i am then told even though i pre qualify, its not live and they wont be able to give me an install date.

Its all very fishy with the numbers passed at this stage !

a road near by home has FTTH available since it went live in the area back in April, however this road has 4 splice boxes and only 3 of them are installed with the first one on the road still unconnected. The houses that are connected to this missing splitter box have been passing for months but to my knowledge can't get FTTH installed due to missing splice box.

The KN enginner who originally installed my connection, said to me he has had several installs cancelled due to missing splice boxes so it's quite common.

It's definitely OpenEir at fault here. They are giving the green light for fibre when it's not ready. I can order now but the fibre isn't ready. The dates from eir retail and another provider are the same. So they get this date from OpenEir.

The people posting here on Boards are only a small subset of those waiting for FTTH and experiencing failed installs. I'd like to know if any person or organisation is keeping any kind of a watch on Eir regarding what looks like bogus 'live' areas.

Another anomaly that needs investigation is the discrepancy between the OpenEir map with 'live' premises and the emails people here have been getting from (presumably) the same OpenEir giving a much later connection date. From what I've read here, we're talking 4-5 months ... and these are only estimates!

This seems to back up my feeling that the splice boxes on my road are useless, given that they exist in the middle of the line from the exchange with none at the start. Smoke and mirrors comes to mind.

The only hope of oversight is the Department doing due diligence. The contract is with them and outside of Openeir retail partners no one else has access to the data.

My area of Pallasgreen, Co Limerick went live yesterday and I got a email from eir today confirming my install for the 8-August, which seems very fast. Hopefully there wont be any issues. Does anyone knoe if its possible to pick the room that you want the fibre to enter the house?

The funny thing is KNN are doing rollout for open eir seem like there one messing up this rural rollout.

Well, like most internet forums you pretty much only hear about the failed/problematic installs.

The KN boys were out on the main road laying fibre a few months ago. Then the lads came with splice boxes on poles.

As the boxes were going up the door to door salesman was around. I took a few days to decide, got a date from him for 2/3 weeks after signing IIRC.

They arrived a day early. I was there to answer questions and pull fibre through attic. He left, I have FTTH.

They blitzed the area, all the neighbours who signed up connected without issue. Although surprisingly not everybody signed up.

We're coming from 5Mbps WISP.

Same here. All set to go and get a call at 5pm the evening beforehand from KN saying install was postponed indefinitely. Radio silence from Eir. No idea when it will happen - was promised mid-July when we signed-up.

In our area it was KNN who did the ducting, clearing and wiring from pole to pole but it was OpenEir who installed the splice boxes.
