OP, can you give a bit more information about how much exercise you'd be able to give daily, how much grooming you'd be up to (less shedding = more grooming IME)? I'm a bit biased, but I've found Greyhounds and lurchers to be very gentle with kids, and big enough not to be sat on by mistake. Much as I love them, I'd advise you to stay away from most terrier breeds: they can be impatient with small kids.
