hi trigger26....if I were you I'd take the post in the private sector. There is more excitement in a private company and much more opportunities. Believe me..I've worked in both sectors...no comparison.

In the end, it will be down to you to draw up a pros and cons list for both staying in and leaving your current role and picking the better option. So the only advice I'd give is once you've done this, follow through with it and don't procrastinate over or second-guess your decision.

Some points to consider:

If you look at the salary scale for EO (probably mentioned in this or similar threads) you'll see that you would be a long time in your current role before you earn 10K to match your initial offer that is currently on the table.

True this could be achieved sooner if you were to gain promotion in your current role but just how realistic (and not just possible) this is would be something that is probably best answered by yourself or your colleagues.

What could your potential earnings be in that timeframe if you made the move to the new job?

Obviously the salary is not the only factor to consider but most non-pay benefits that others often refer to in these type of threads (e.g. shorter working year, flexi-time, study leave) are not exclusive to the public sector - I've never worked anywhere in my career that did not have these benefits and more (e.g. private health insurance) and the same applies for my friends in similar roles. While it is great to have such options available, the reality is that most people will never avail of the majority of them.

What are the promotional and upskilling prospects for a software tester in that timeframe?

It might be difficult to accurately answer the two questions above that were asked in relation to the new role but the thing to remember is that the answer/outcome of both can be directly and strongly affected by you and your approach to your career (this would also apply in your current role).

Yeah got word last week got placed 11th. Don't know what the turn around is for placements etc. Anyone else get it? Do you know what department's are looking to fill the role?

I got an email on Friday saying I'm being considered for appointment. I have to fill out some forms. No actual offer or mention of which department though.

I came 1st on the regional panel infrastructure. Does anyone know if there will be positions throughout the country or are they mainly placed in Dublin? Is there a national plan to employ at least one in each region?

I called last week and was told there has been no appointments to Regional infra since last year. So nothing moving in 7 Months. I was also told that the panel is a two year panel.....

I think the whole EO ICT regional has been abandoned. Disgraceful. Waste of peoples time and money.

It's a joke... has it been abandoned?? There seem to be no vacancies 'down the country' and to think I was so happy to get on the stupid panel....makes me sick.

Cheers for the replies, I placed number 1 on my regional panel in HEO infrastructure but no sign of an offer. I guess its just the luck of the draw which region you pick! I don't even know if there's an IT department in my region!!!

This is the thread for the ICT Specialists (Executive Officer level) in the Civil Service, but it appears to have been hi-jacked by posts about the more recent ICT Specialists (Higher Executive Officer level) in the Civil Service competition.

At the very least people should be specifying to which panel they refer

The reality is, as with a lot of the civil service, there ain't a lot of ICT jobs outside of Dublin.

Hi folks, ref HEO campaign some info on numbers called.
"We are in the process of organising interviews for Dublin vacancies for candidates placed up to 84 in the Infrastructure and Operations Open Stream. The current vacancies are in Dublin however the panel will remain in place for up to 2 years and further vacancies may arise during this time.
There is still a possibility that we will be calling a further batch of candidates for interview for the Infrastructure and Operations Stream."

I did both interviews Dev and Infra, as hadn't done an interview in over 10yrs and such a big opportunity I was really stressed going into the first one (Dev) and didn't do well. At the second one I said feck it, its only a conversation and went in more relaxed, even had a laugh with interviewers. That being said review security and cloud, have examples of any projects where you've made improvements, his you've handled difficult situations like crank calls or staffing issues. Good luck.
