Insurnce expires tomorrow, no way to renew until Monday

I just remembered that my car insurance expires tomorrow and that my current provider sent me a letter two months ago with a very competitive quote. The problem is that there is no way to renew online with them, so I have to wait until Monday morning to call them and renew.

Just wondering what my options are here, should I get cover online elsewhere and cancel on Monday before the end of the cooling off period? I got a quote there from 123.ie that was almost 3 times the quote I received from my existing provider!

Look at the letter you received. Sometimes your insurance continues (especially if you pay by direct bebit) without you having to do anything and you only contact them if you are not renewing with them. I was with Allianz and that was the way they operated.

If it was sent to you 2 months ago, I'd hope the quote is still valid. If you need to get somewhere, get someone with driving other cars extension to take you, in your car.

Was it bank of Ireland insurance ?
If it was,they sent you the new disc in the paperwork.

You might want to check that letter again. I've just renewed recently and the initial quote was just valid for the month. If not renewed within that month I'd have to reapply.

Furthermore, some companies eg the AA was only giving me a quote valid for a week.
As another poster said it may be advisable to leave the car at home this weekend.
The gardai may already know that your insurance has expired.

The garda ANPR system only flags untaxed cars, they have no access to actual insurance details other than the insurance expiry date which is gained from tax renewal forms/applications but it doesn't flag on their ANPR system.

The quote is valid until 12:00 tonight, after that they are not obliged to offer the same premium

might be worth sending them an email (quoting existing details) this evening confirming acceptance of their offer, with a query about paying... sing dumb and hope they look after you on monday.

Most insurance companies have an online renewal option, failing that they are usually available on Saturdays.

In a worst case scenario and you can't make contact and you must use the car before Monday, you could take out new online insurance and then cancel under distance sales rules.

I started the thread because I am not entirely comfortable leaving a car worth thousands of euro sitting outside my house uninsured for the weekend. I would never drive uninsured and besides we have a second car in the family

I wasn't looking for suggestions of alternative means of transport, I was hoping that if there were others that found themselves in the same boat previously that they would have some useful information to share. For example, that the policy may automatically kick in for a fixed number of days or something (since I don't pay by DD this is not likely)

I suspect the poster whom I asked to explain what he meant, was looking for an opportunity to pontificate about driving uninsured but he was barking up the wrong tree

Have you checked online? You'll have a reference number which you can input on their website, there may be an option to renew online in which case you can donut before the quote expires at midnight. You'll then get a confirmation email which you can print and show to Gardai if you are stopped over the weekend.

I have and couldn't find such an option. I also tried renewing directly with RSA online but the form only accepts XM policy numbers and not BM as issued via BOI

Unless I misplaced an additional page that came with my renewal letter, I have no reference number, just policy number and premium quote

I'm guilty of leaving it until the last minute under the erroneous assumption that I could renew online like I do every year with other providers.

How making this mistake somehow makes my attempts to now rectify the situation to now appear 'strange' is beyond me
