I'm not superstitious and don't believe in any of that stuff but I'm still not going to walk under a ladder. I'll go safely around it thanks. I wouldnt do it myself so if anyone attempted to open an umbrella in my house, I'd be shocked at the blatant cheek of them.

There's lots more superstitions that i follow and live by but I don't believe in any of them

I'm not superstitious, but I don't walk under ladders as its more likely that something will fall on me than if I go around. There is a reason for some superstitions

OP, You are superstitious. If you were not then you would walk under ladders (or around but for the reason of something not falling on you rather than something bad will happen in the future) and wouldnt care less if someone opened an umbrella in your house.

Thats like me saying "i dont believe painkillers work but i take them when i have a headache".

I'm not superstitious and I wouldn't walk under a ladder unless for some reason I couldn't go around it. What's the point in risking something falling on your head from a height when you can just take an extra 2 or 3 steps and avoid it!

Generally when something falls from a ladder it lands around it and not under it.

I don't think I have any superstitions that I adhere to at all, thank God.

When you come right down to it there is very little that CAN be proven.

I'm with Descarte on this one "I think, therefore I am" anything else you can't really be sure of.

For example - "Prove" that you aren't asleep and dreaming all this right now. Or that you aren't just some brain in a jar a la futurama:eek:

I worked as a house painter and I agree. Ladders are tall with a small base. They have people carrying tools with nowhere to put them do dropping stuff is always a risk. If you walk under a ladder there's a decent chance something bad will happen.

Most superstition is nonsense but some are like apocryphal tales

Was with a friend one day and we both walked under a ladder with a guy painting on it. Big load of paint fell on his head and we had to go to his aunts house to get the paint out.

I'd say the painter was waiting for the opportunity all day to make someone superstitious for the rest of their life!

When boarding a plane I instinctively give the outside fuselage a quick double pat.
While there are some who think machines have 'souls' I do it purely for reassurance that the plane will do it's job and not kill us all.

I think you're bang on the money - we are hardwired to look for and identify patterns, being able to predict the future to some extent is the very basis of our success as a species. It forms the basis of everything we do - if I do x, y will happen and then I can eat it, kill it, escape from it, sell it or whatever. So much so that we will lock on to anything remotely like a pattern, a coincidence even.
I'm wearing a new shirt, I got laid - I'm wearing that shirt out next time. Most likely it wasn't even anything to do with the shirt, it's usually the shoes!:D

I was walking to my final exam when a magpie landed in front of me. I didn't take another step until I spotted a second one nearby.
