Clare GAA discussion thread

Thought I'd start this thread as haven't found one of the same.

So, 2010.. new decade... new beginnings? With the aim of the League being to get back into Division 1, could Clare also achieve success in Munster this year?

As well as a proposed friendly versus Cork, Ger O'Loughlin has a good load of matches to blood players from U-21's into the senior game. With the opponents in the League not posing a major threat some would argue Clare wont get as much preparation as Div 1 teams, but maybe it will give them an opportunity to focus on their strength and conditioning?

So, Clare face Waterford on Sunday at 2pm in Ballyduff Upper.. I think they should win against this weakened Waterford side, but I think it will be close tbh. But could Waterford topple us in the pre season tournament?

So more than likely our 3 away games will be Down, Cork and Meath as we had them all at home this year?

normally that's the way it works ,if it dose your probably looking louth , tipp, cavan and rosscommon at home , better to have them home rather then away especially tipperary expect them to have another big run this summer on the back of todays win

Great atmosphere around Ennis earlier. Footballers tried hard, but Mayo are just that bit better. Roll on tomorrow! Or today actually.

Tough luck on Clare footballers yesterday. Mayo were more streetwise too. Martin McMahon hit with closed fist 3/4 times tried to play on whereas any contact with Colm Boyle he made sure to jump to ground and highlight to match officials. Jamie Malone continuously blocked off ball by Keegan. He be better rolling around the ground like Diarmuid O'Connor. Still been a decent season, survived Division 2 and played 4 championship games. I believed they started training so Id say league survival was priority. League of bench cost them dearly in league and even yesterday. Hopefully Colm Collins stays on and bloods some young players or lads that walked away return. I can understand lads not playing D3 or D4 but should have anyone in county that available to play Division 2 as Clare football in a good place now.

It's frustrating. Just once I'd love to see them go 100% man-to-man for 70 minutes. If they get trounced and it's proved not to work then fine, forget it, but it couldn't be much worse than what's going on.

Everyone in the Killinan End was going ape sh*t over it, the Cork lad I went to it with agreed it was ludicrous, what's going on in management's head that makes it seem a sensible approach.

It basically meant you were giving Cork full forward line a 50 50 chance to win possession every time.

abslouthly 100% about the tactics but lads that was a bad show , i understand that donal and gerry encourage players to play with a bit of freedom , but today was taking the piss , some of the on the ball decision making was shocking , our shooting from out the field was horrendous , any time we played the ball in on top of the cork full back line we looked dangerous ,.......so we decided to ignore them as much as possible
if we have to drop players like john conlon podge and tony kelly well then so be it we need to be brave on the line aswell , people like brian cody wouldnt stand for the type of performance that some of out key men put in today

jason mccarthy ,molone ,david reidy colm galvin were all excellent , we have some really good lads on the bench but i just feel some lads are getting away with murder at the moment

If Clare didn't withdraw lads then that backline is badly exposed with nash's puckouts. Let's face it Clare's problems are defensive and the taking of wrong options on occasions up front.

Ok as best as I can put it.

First off well done to Cork. Said it to a couple of them afterwards, they were the better team and fully deserved their win.

I hate saying this but the management team will be very disappointed with their decision making. The puckouts against Nash were nothing short of absolutely lunacy. Ok look, you want to drop the wing forwards back and close of the space, but when Nash hits the free ball to the cornerbacks, the wing forwards instinctively pushed as a result, freeing up space in the Cork forward line. As Im talking as Daly's is saying on TSG, he is unsure about this strategy, but he is being generous imo, it gave Cork an easy out to build an attack and get a constant foot hold. The management must hold accountability here.

Starting Oisin was a mistake. That's on the management again. It was a gamble playing a guy who hasn't played since March but that's how it worked out.

The quality and the strategy of how we want to get the ball into the full forward line needs to be revised also. Against Limerick we got 3 breaks that got goals from hitting then ball direct inside, but most of the time were trying to hit a diagonal ball. That's a good ball to hit so long as you're hitting it in quick, which is not what we are doing. Were always looking for an extra link up pass slowing the ball down meaning that the ball is being sent out almost over the sideline but the time its sent in. Galvin, for the great link man he is, just could not unlock the Cork full backline with passes. This managements philosophy has always to short pass it out of defense and hit is diagonal into the forward line, but they need to decide that maybe we need to quicken out delivery. Did Shanagher or Sod get one decent ball in space today? For what it's worth CMcG was very frustrated walking off at HT.

I dont know how we do for the rest of the year. We have only played 2 games in 13 weeks? Maybe the QF might be beneficial.. I dont know. We have alot to fix and look a good bit off Galway and Cork. McInerney really needs to be in the half back line, maybe we just bite the bullet and leave Dillon at full back. McCarthy is going to start soon, maybe his time has already arrived.

Very deflated, feels like we haven't fired a bullet yet.

Would it be fair to say Cork fans outnumbered Clare by at least 4:1 today?
Town end and both stands looked all red.

Maybe Donal has a point though.

Plenty of shots went wide that you'd expect to go over, hit the crossbar twice, missed a penalty, Horgan avoided a red card etc.

Cork were fantastic too.

We got back to within 2 points, and from there it was up to lads to win those balls from there, it's not all about tactics

Yeah they were. Id say the stand was 20pc clare 80pc Cork. Then they had about 40pc of the Killinan. It worked out probably 10k to 35k id say Clare to Cork if even.

I'd echo this. I really think that game was there for the taking. Definitely bad wides that should be scored, two balls off the crossbar and the penalty narrowly over.

The puck outs were frustrating but I think management were thinking if they pushed up nash would've just picked out a man easily enough further out the field. So they were concentrating on winning the ball played directly in.

Quarter final draw is as tougher this year than its ever been. But I really think we'll have a big say yet. Definitely more positive than the last few years. Guaranteed to get Wexford I the quarter final!!!!

I thought we could have won today. We wasted a lot of ball, I agree with everyone that the puckouts killed us. Eveytime that Nash was allowed hit it to his cornerbacks they were able to drop the ball on Horgan or Cadogan. The goal we gave away was soft, O Brien was turned way too easily and he was postioned badly. Seadna should have been on Cadogan from the start he was able to contain him very well I thought. POC lack of pace was exposed today.

When Nash was forced to go long our half back line did well. But then the problem was we wouldn't go long. Cleary for example won seven balls in the second half and went long once, of the six short ones he did I think three of them were won back by Cork and they scored easy points. Tony and Galvin should have hit it long aswell instead of going for monster points. Reidy and McCarthy did well when they came on. We still give away very soft frees by pulling the jersey for a second, Fitzgearald and Cleary do it the most. Conlon was poor today. Pa Kelly or Donal Tuohy need to be in goals the next day.

Tough draw for ye lads, I'd say ye would've preferred getting us. Would have to fancy Tipp but wouldn't write ye off. If PuiC isn't ready, would ye play Tipp in Thurles?

No way should a team have home advantage for an All Ireland quarter final. Either have a double header in Croke Park (best for Clare IMO) or have Clare/Tipp in Limerick and Wexford/Tipp in Nolan Park

That was very poor defending. He got turned on the goal side which no defender should ever allow.

Fair play to ye on Saturday, really impressed by the drive and ambition that was shown in the 1st half, could have been another 5 or 6 points up. Think Mayo fitness told in the 2nd half but that team should have nothing to fear in the league.
Massive atmosphere and as always great banter with the Clare fans and those working the pubs and restaurants. Best of luck in yer football next year.

Not a hope that Nowlan Park could hold Wexford V Waterford, those two bandwagons are well and truly up and running.

On the plus side, our performance was much better than against Limerick.
Puck-outs were improved, free-taking was better and Tony Kelly, while not at his best, was at least influential in the game.
But we'll need to improve again for the next day
