Comuicorp has written to the Minister For Communications Dennis Naughten asking him to get the BAI to withdraw the new licences been tendered until a full review of the radio sector has taken place. If they get their meeting with the Minister we may not see Radio Nova get their national licence. Source RadioToday.ie.

A Full Review is badly needed if we want to be able to listen to niche stations. The current format is why TXFM / Phantom couldn't survive and 8Radio is mostly online only.

Yep. Communicorp are actually completely right on this one. Commercial sector is in ruins because the BAI regulations are so out-dated.

Communicorp(and any other media company) have a financial interest in ensuring that no new entrants are allowed into the market.

Is it though? The BAI just re oraginsed tgr communications codes and are actively conversing with people about how to improve the sector according the reports.

Seems to me that communicorp stations are struggling to a point, but I would suggest they over stretched their hand and have stations competing against each other and trying to sustain them all is like some sort of oxymoron, stations stealing clients from each other.

Although I think a review should be held, I think more licenses could stimulate the market, it's up to other companies to find cost effective ways to operate or make money. No one will take a license if they won't make money out of it so there's nothing to worry about, and even if all that comes from this is Nova going national or multi city I don't see how that can be a bad time.

Nova's music policy is focused on the older listener,who will forget that they played the same song an hour ago...gotta love old people....:)

In fact, it maybe offers a chance for an aside - take five bands off Nova's playlist, and add five that are rarely, if ever, played. (Let's leave aside the likes of Alice Cooper, Pat James, John Clarke, Tony Ainscough and even When The Feck as these tend to be more diverse anyway)

I never really heard his 2fm show, but I guess it's a pretty similar format. 4fm no longer cater for those with an interest in such music. In its infancy, there was little music beyond the 80s. It was great, and a pleasure to listen to. Their idea of classic hits now are mostly more recent songs. Well, I say recent as being from the noughties, probably the odd more up-to-date record with the odd track thrown in from the 60s to the 90s. John Clarke just plays the real oldies! But, for John Clarke, I don't think his taste in music would be accommodated there!

What, you would rather have the same 100 songs repeated day after day? Pat James or Peter Devlin should deffo play those bands, if not the other DJs.

I once believed it was a rock station too. But my idea of rock and theirs are seemingly different.
I was hoping it would be more like planet rock but I gave up on that thought years ago!

On a side note, Greg was off for a few days this week and there is a noticeable difference in his playlist versus the ****e Johnny Bowe plays. His pronunciation of some of the New Zealand town's and cities during his coverage of the lions tour is laughable too.
