The thread on same sex parenting got me thinking of this.

If you have step siblings and or half siblings has it made any difference to your life.

I do always slag my brother about either being adopted or being the "milkman's"

But he's neither, he's just a weird middle child.

My mother is now terminally ill and only just told me that my sister is actually my half sister the result of having an affair.

Eventually I got the courage to speak to my sister and she told me that our mother had told that her that I was the result of an extra marital affair.

I kid you not , when we confronted the mad fecker she told us that she said it for devilment and that my older son was in on the joke as well as some of her sisters.

I'm one of five. My three older brothers are step brothers from my mothers first family. Their marriage split up and she married my father after. My whole life I never considered them anything other than brothers. Then when she died the eldest got into a dispute with my father over ownership of the family house and who owned it. Now I only talk to one of them. The eldest has basically cut all ties with us. Even when I told him of my own children being born I heard nothing back from him.

Seems strange even now, as when I was growing up there was never any inclination that we were anything other than a family unit, but I guess he felt different.

My parents divorced when I was a toddler, I have four half brothers but I have never viewed them as anything other than my annoying brothers.

I don't look like my siblings. I do look like my cousins, though. :eek: I recently saw a picture of myself as a baby with my mother's sister and the thought occurred to me...

Our family is made of two of hers, two of mine and four of ours!

An amusing development is that many people say that my second looks like her second (step siblings). :cool:

One half sister & two half brothers through his dad.
Two half sisters & a half brother through his mam.
& another half brother & half sister through his mam, who are also half siblings to the two sisters & one brother.

Given how short a time that divorce has been legal in Ireland and separation has been "acceptable", I would say that we are for the moment heavily skewed towards the "no step or half siblings" end of the band than other western countries.

As Bambi says though, I'd say there's plenty of unknowns out there. Women and men trapped in loveless marriages don't tend to remember their wedding vows.

9 of us all together, myself and sister are full blood to each other and I've a brother and sister who are full blood to each other.

I've never thought of any of them has half or step brothers/sisters.

It all seems normal to me, I get funny looks though when explaining our family history to people, or when I tell people there's 9 of us but can only remember 8 names.

This. Very much this.

Myself and my wife both come from "traditional" familes (though both of our parents separated after their child rearing days were over). Our kids are actually half-siblings (the eldest was born before we met) but wouldn't ever think of themselves as such. Our eldest also has a step brother and a half brother on his Dad's side.

The shape of Irish families has been changing hugely since Generation X hit their child raising years and Gen Y continued along the same path.

Half Siblings and it is a hassle. Constantly on edge around them and there has been umpteen different rows over the years.

None of them make much of an effort with me. One lives in Scotland, I never hear from her at all.

Grew up in traditional family, my pappy died when we were mostly fledged although my youngest sister was 14 and the only dependent left and my maw maw met a handsome second husband a few short years later so most of us grew up in the traditional sense. Then we all went to live in kansas.

Three step brothers..

Dad remarried and when my mum died my brother and myself ended up with them.

Stepmum and the 3 hated us and we hated them. We were teens and they were older.

The effect it had on us was it drove my brother to attempt suicide and turned me into someone that sit with no expressions even although I am laughing or crying inside.

After my dad died my brother and I got out. Left one weekend she was away 17 years ago and have never been in touch with them since.

The stories of the wicked step mother and the ugly step siblings is true.

Friends keep asking me "Do you think that they have realised you have moved out yet?"

I have a half brother and half sister.

My mum was married before she married my dad. When her first husband found out she was preggo, he up and left her. My half bro was maybe 8 or so when my dad came on the scene. So we grew up with him, and we don't seem him as a half brother at all, he's full fledged in our eyes.

About 4 years ago, I discovered i had a half sister on my fathers side. He had been working in England prior to meeting my mum. Returned to Ireland, met my mum and the rest is history. I think he only found out about the child himself about 4 years after she was born, but i've never been clearly told the full story.

I met her for the first time last summer. I hope to keep the relationship up with her too, she's coming to Ireland for the first time in August.

I'm my parents' only child together- they split when I was 4. I'm 29 now.

Dad went on to marry my step mum and have my 2 brothers (half, but I consider them my brothers). They're now 20 and 15.

Mam married my stepdad, who has 2 sons from his first marriage. They're quite a bit older than me, in their 30s and 40s. I get on very well with them, but I wouldn't say we're close.

It all works quite well, but my OH got a land when I told him I had 2 dads and 4 brothers....
