Hey BA! I've been playing Assassin's Creed Syndicate recently and you have the ability to pick locks of doors and chests in the game. What I thought would be pretty cool is if you could do it in real life, it's something I always wanted to learn. Not to use it for malicious reasons but just to know. I was looking around on a couple of different sites and found a cheap kit for beginners to learn. This particular set is on sale at the moment for €8.75. I bought a set and can't wait for it to arrive, I think I'd share it here if people had a similar interest to my own. Hope it helps someone!

Just opened a lock that was without a key for three years and a sense of accomplishment is overwhelming... It's the main reason I got the kit and was all I was thinking of since april... Broke one of the picks though...

I find raking is handy for me... Have opened 2 padlocks this way...
Front door was a no go for me and I'm happy with that as I'd like to think now billy down the road with his cheap Chinese lock picking kit ain't gonna be able to break into my house and steal my lock picking kit...

Reading this guide. I find all I need to do with the practice lock is lift the pin furthest inside and it opens. Still nice to see how it works but might look for something better to practice on...

One of the golden rules of hobby picking is that you shouldn't mess with "live" locks. The pins can be easily damaged by rough use of the tools.

Find old locks to play with. Go to one of those places where padlocks are attached to bridges in a show of love (?), the local council will usually thank you. If you see an old hall door, check if the lock is still in place. If it is, remove it and practice on it. Ask the local builders to keep old locks for you. Loads of ways to get practice locks.

That's definitely good advice. I fecked up a a backdoor lock practicing:o

Not too put out by it though as it showed up the inadequacies of the current lock in the door which needs changing for that reason anyway.

I managed to put the cam out of kilter by rotating one side of the lock while the other stayed static which means I now can't get the key out of the door without locking it first. Doesn't sound like a problem until you want to take the key out of the inside to step outside to lock the door from the outside!

It can be sorted pretty easily by removing the barrel and re aligning the cam to the right position with some jiggery pokery but to be honest I've decided to fit a newer euro lock instead which is bump/pick;)/drill proof.

I've got some spare eurolock barrels to play with next. Speaking of which, if anyone is looking at new locks, I got a set of Avocet ABS MK3 Keyed alike for front and back doors from here:
