2017 UK General Election - 8th June

As discussed in the Brexit thread, probably best for a new thread on this.

It looks like it will be held on June 8th providing Parliament votes for it on Wednesday, which seems to be almost certain and can't personally see it being anything other than an increased majority for the Tory party.

That's the problem with FPTP though, it's not reflective of overall public opinion, just swing voters in swing constituencies, and turnout in a small number of constituencies has a huge effect.

Jesus, this is unreal stuff. Now, it looks like the exit poll might be overstating the Tory vote :eek:!

Clearly, the British electorate is nowhere near as gullible as was thought.

I think what's happening really is there are a heck of a lot angry voters, and are lashing out where ever they can. It was Brexit last year, as that was the 'anti-establishment' option for older voters. Now the younger voters, who are seriously cheesed off with the referendum result are going for Jeremy Corbyn, who is seriously anti-establishment.

I don't agree with the youth voting for Corbyn but I am most glad that they bothered to vote. If only they'd bothered to vote in such numbers last year, but still anytihng that gets the youth out there voting is a good thing. After all, we will have to live with the consequences of Brexit and the decisions any nation makes for the longest period of time. The old ones voted most enthusiastically for committing economic suicide for the UK but will have to live with it the least amount of time.

It was clear from the headlines in the biased right wing press on Wednesday and Thursday that they were seriously worried about Corbyn and were trying to scare their readers into voting Tory.

Also very interesting that UKIP voters went back to Labour. I thought it was a bad call by Labour to be so committal to Brexit, but it makes sense - after all a lot of Leave voters were old Labour voters not Tories (there were enough loony people in the Tories wanting to leave the EU even before UKIP were a force to be reckoned with). I'm glad that at least some of the British electorate realise that the Tories' attitude towards Europe was never going to get the UK a decent deal, and at least some of them are on the same planet as the rest of us in Europe and recognise the reality of the situation. For all Labour's daftness, at least they have some clue as to how not to antagonise the rest of the EU and hopefully get a better deal for the UK (and EU) as a result.

And... Angus is gone from the SNP to the Tories!

Well seeing as the SNP has lost some ground they will need to re-asses where they stand. This is especially true if Labour offers a softer Brexit where the UK actually doesn't leave the single market.

Their stated aim is to keep the Conservatives out of power, so I see that if the SNP wants to keep to their promises then they will have to compromise as well.
