What do you miss about After Hours?

Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, Instagram have all emerged in the last 10 years and with it has seen a change in the way we interact, an evolution (desecration) in the way we communicate and a threat to the hallowed message forum.

In short a lot of sh1t has changed.

During the golden era of After Hours (2008-2012), there would very rarely be a single thread that didn't contain at least one of the following posts:

"Pics or GTFO." - if you revealed yourself as female.

"PM Sent " - to any said females who committed the mortal sin of confirming they are indeed single.

"+1" instead of actually typing up a post on why you agree with someone, +1 had you covered.

"FYP" - the old 'I hilariously edited your post'.

"Massive Use of Spaces to get to the...."

*punchline in really small writing

"Pighead in epic third-person hilarity posts"

"Thinly veiled "I have a ..." Boast" - when anyone mentioned anything actually positive about their life, like having a girlfriend or a fancy cheese grater.

"About three fiddy" - the only mature response to any question related to numbers.

"In before the Lock" - when you knew a thread was going nowhere. (Ok smart-asses knock yourselves out with reply #1).

"Your ma" - 2 decisive words in anyone's lexicon.

A salute to the old days when we were a lot younger and slightly less un-cool.

At least in after hours you can have a bit of banter and a bit of lateral thinking , it's not one big circle jerk of people agreeing with everything in the op and back slapping each other on their similarities

I could post in a few other forums like farming or soccer but I think too much agreement is as bad as too much disagreement , in after hours people seem to get it right a lot of the time

I find Boards.ie way more engaging and entertaining than anything I ever got from Facebook and the rest which I largely don't really use much anymore now that the novelty of them has fully worn off. Educational too I might add.

The Rock & Metal forum isn't what it used to be when I joined under my original account in 2006. There were lots of great posters and interesting discussions back then.

These days it's middle-aged bores discussing only two topics - Guns n' Roses and Metallica.

After hours is still a good place to go on the internet imo. It use to be one of the few places you could go. So it attracted more people and or people posted a larger array of subject matter here.

My oldest account that I can't find now is 2001.
I think these days that there are more specialised sites that do a better job for particular activities. Say Facebook for the photography forums etc.

I use to meet people from boards, I have friends from boards but I use to notice that a lot of men were on boards to get women, or at least to interact with them. I don't know if any of the relationships lasted.

They'd do stupid things because it was different or you could post about it. Some of it was sad and desperate, a lot of them fought over women, some of the women craved the attention. I think boards offered both types something the real-world couldn't.
Yet some of it was great, funny and genuine, it out weighed the other stuff. There are specialised sites just for dating now, so boards has lost out on the men showing off element.

I completed a thesis on metaworlds and how they encroached on real life, this was years ago. I recruited some people for surveys for metaworlds here but essentially boards was one too, full of people acting out a different part of their personality online, trying to find themselves, to fit in.

The world has moved on I think. People are also a little bit more afraid to be different in different ways, it's more about treating your dog like a child, in your face non religious posts by people who think it makes them sound intelligent when they joke about the faith of others, or cycling threads.
Cycle to the dog creche on a Tuesday, the day you decided is your transgender day, laughing at Santy God as you try to find ignorant motorists to sort out and post about later.

The soccer forum was always a train wreck to be fair.

I think people prefer self promoting mediums more now and just being pighead doesn't cut it if only boards members know it.

But it's still a great place to go as far as I'm concerned. I made good friends here and received great advice here too.

In fairness I think it has got better. A lot of the more notorious snowflakes seem to have rage quit and the mods seemed to lighten up, a bit.

One think I don't care for is meme's. They don't tend to make me laugh out loud anymore and I think there is something a lot better in a witty remark than a copy and pasted meme. Not that I'm knocking you personally riffmonagous.
