Best Enigma 2 boxes?

I'm looking to replace a few enigma 1 boxes in my house (Bedrooms). Mainly because a few of the TV stations we watch have gone mpeg4 (DVBS2) only. I'm looking at Linux Enigma2 because of the following reasons:

Channel lists/Bouquets are very easy to edit and maintain
Web streaming to laptops and devices is a must (We watch a lot of TV in the summer house during the summer)
General use of plugins is easy
Great support

I'm looking for suggestions please, Best value (Cheapest), I wouldn't rule out a combo (DVBS2 and DVBT)

Obviously I'm aware of the DM800's (Getting a bit long in the tooth now) and the Amiko Ailen 2.

I don't really need an STB like an Ailen, as these receivers will be just used in the bedrooms, So basic suggestions welcomed.

There seems to be a lot of choice out there now compared to a few years back.

I would want it for:
Saorsat
Freesat 28E
Freeview HD

Will the receiver have a single EPG for all channels?

If it has a single epg, can Channels be organised in any particular order?

Will it have a seven day EPG?

Will it have recording serial link on Freesat 28E channels?

I presume I could set manual recordings for Saorsat, but must be serial link for 28E.

Do any linux receiver have mheg5 software

Would possibly also want a 4k receiver, looking to the future.

You can have all your channels in a giant list and you can have them organised in groups.
Yes to 7 day epg
There is a way to autorecord series, using autotimer, either sat or terrestrial. Series recording for saorview should be possible if your receiver has saorview mheg5.
There was a Walker combo box, not Linux,, WP645TSHD, which had mheg5. I don't know of any Linux combo box with mheg5 implemented, but there is an mheg5 plugin for Linux, it may available on certain Linux images and certain boxes only.
There are a few contenders for Linux combo receivers with 4K. These range from h265 playback capable, but in HD, to full UHD reception, recording playback and UHD resolution output. Three main contenders discussed a few pages back, the Mut@nt, the Edision Mega and the VU+. Also The Octagon.

Saorview/Freeview HD and Satellite can be combined for watching and recording with a single dvb-t2 tuner and a single dvb-s2 tuner configuration box. Obviously if you more than a single tuner for each you will be able to watch any satellite channel whilst recording another satellite channel. Might not be an issue if you can get Freeview HD too.

Just remember that dvb-t2 is a must for Freeview HD, not a dvb-t.

MHEG5. Is there any particular reason you want this ? Its not required for EPG. The EPG is populated from the mux anyway. Is there any reason you are using Saorsat instead of Saorview ? You'll need a Diseqc switch, to make that seamless. You'll also need at least 2 satellite inputs on whatever box you are thinking of buying.

Autotimer works for both. You create your own Favouite channel list and all can be combined in one channel list.

Officialy SH$ is not supported by Openvix.

Didnt stop someone porting Vix for Sh4 boxes though.

Dont have an Sh4 box, so youll have to try it yourself.

Its a similar spec to the Edision OS Mini and runs Openatv ,apart from that I dont know too much about it

I'd pay a little more just because of the remote. It's the standard cheaply made Chinese remote you get with the android boxes. They are terrible to use. Had to use one last night actually and I almost threw it out the window. Makes an annoyingly loud clicking noise when you hit a button as well!

Betters deals about to be honest. The Edision with wifi built in isn't much more.

Its actually a Freesat v7 remote or looks very like it.

Vix4SH4 too so its not MIPS. The flash is fairly low but that can be overcome with a USB stick.

Yes,that is a good point ,a good remote is imperative.
It works out at £55 inc delivery to the North ,~66 euro and then another 4 for Parcel Wizard/Parcel Motel.

Edision Mini is 94 euro off freetv with discount code and has a much better remote and wifi built in.

No,its Mips ,it uses the Broadcom 7362 cpu ,the same as the Edision OS Mini ,Vu+ Zero, Technomate Nano SE,Xtrend 7500, Zgemma ,etc.
256MB of Flash is plenty for most users to be honest.

What caught me was the Sh4 openvix link. In other words its not supported by Vix and someone has ported the firmware to work with this box. The patch is for another receiver and the OEM isn't providing the drivers, I would imagine.

One I have seen appearing that is reasonably priced is the Edision OS Mega Triple. 1600MHZ CPU and supports H265. 2 DVB-S2 1 & DVB-T2. Its 179STG at WOS.

Yes not officially supported by Vix ,but Openatv support it .
There doesnt seem to be too much information about it online .

Receiver. If you are putting in a VuDuo, get a usb dvb-t stick (less than a tenner on ebay) search for RTL2832U+R820T2 chipset. They come in black or blue about a tenner. They are fine for Saorview and you'll be able to have both the uk channels and the satellite channels in one channel list on the one box with the vu remote. You'll need an RF to MCX cable which are about a euro(so that you can connect it to a proper aerial or wall socket). The little aerials that come with the USB DVB-T sticks are useless.

If they have no aerial at all, Can you install an aerial on the dish - Ones that clamp on to the dish (Mercury 4G Ready Clamp on UHF Mixer Aerial - 10 euro) ? You could then run the aerial back through the existing satellite cable and then split it out at the cable going to the box with a 3 euro splitter.

Are they fairly straightforward to set up ?There is a working out door aerial that is working after all.

5 years ago. It should be fine. I'd imagine its a USB stick with the Afatech 9015 chipset if its from that time. Yeah that will work. Post a picture of it.

You'll need an RF to MCX cable. You will only get that on the internet. It connects from the USB stick to the wall socket (you will probably need a small male to male coax cable to junction it as the mcx to rf cable are fairly short). The drivers are in the plugins under drivers.

The RF to MCX cable looks like this.

When you have the driver installed for the chipset of the stick, You then go in to your tuners and configure it for Europe and then just go in and scan the terrestrial channels.

What would be the easiest way to find out the chipset?
Blackhole is the current image but am I right saying it will be easier to use vix as the drivers will be listed in the plugins ?

Well if its identical to the one in the picture, the chipset is R820T and should be under drivers in the feeds.

Blackhole was traditionally very good for writing the drivers for E2 for the various chipsets as they had a drivers guru in angelofsky. They definitely support this usb stick as it does more than just dvb-t it also does shortwave and dab and they wrote extensive stuff to run on e2 for it. But Vix is so much better in terms of the GUI in my opinion and have a lot of supported usb svb-t devices these days. Try it on both.

I dont know. Zgemma use a ported version of e2 as they are an Sh4 architecture box. Openvix is written for MIPS. I dont know how the drivers behave under the porting to Sh4. You would have to try and install the driver from the feeds and see if it works. It probably does.

Would depend on whether you are near a transmitter. I'd be setting it up with that little aerial near a window cill to just tune in the stations (assuming the person who will eventually using it is in the same transmitter area).

Nothing to stop you seeing if downloading the drivers under plugins is enabling the dvb-t tuner in the menu (under service searching - you should see the three tuners if it installed correctly). Thats your main concern first.

If you want to know what the usb stick is, plug it into a windows pc. That'll detect the chipset (something E2 boxes dont do). You can then look for a driver with that name in the plugins on the box (make sure to have the usb dvb-t stick inserted in the usb port when installing the driver). Reboot the box at the rocker switch to make sure the driver takes effect.

If its installed correctly you should see it under service searching or device info like the one below.
