I saw a picture online of truck rammed inside a department store. Just think of the mess if a truck smashed into your local Penney's department store. I be surprised if it just 1 or 2 people dead here?

There is quite likely an element of copycatting and online radicalisation going on with these.

The only way to break the cycle is to tackle the ideology. How one does that however is another question entirely.

On a few technical points, the IRA was closer to a revolutionary-socialist mindset than a theocratic one - I think they would have been more interested in having 'the people' on their side rather than 'the lord'.

In any case, the problem that remains is that while you might look back in history (or indeed the far flung parts of the world) to find Christians doing similar acts in the name of religion, when it comes to the sheer death toll of attacks and proximity to major European centres, Islamist attack pretty much have the monopoly.

On the question of wider peacefulness or culpability, to be frank I think the major problem that remains (which might not be 100 miles from the situation of Irish people during the troubles) is that the attitudes of the majority don't really matter, it is the violent minority that determines the course of affairs and that violent minority has been rather busy either in terrorist attacks within Europe or fighting for violent Jihadist groups abroad. I believe one stunning statistic showed as many or even more British Muslims fighting for ISIS than fighting in the British army.

Of course, this is taking the position that there is a binary state for Muslims as either loyal citizens or violent jihadists, which is clearly false. This presents another problem, namely the issue of non-violent extremists, that is to say populations of European Muslims who though non-violent, hold utterly abominable views on things like gay people, adultery and apostasy. Polling by Pew and others has shown some rather disturbing trends which would make people uncomfortable even if there was not one bomb involved.

So this essentially leaves the fairly troubling situation of a small number of violent extremists, backed up by a somewhat larger number of supporters existing within a demographic with still larger (albeit non-violent) support for many of those violent jihadis objectives. To put it another way, you have on the one hand the problem of the guys who attacked Charlie Hebdo, but then you have the problem of the people who essentially took the line that CH was asking for trouble.

Now this is and of itself would be pretty problematic for any society to get a grip on, except in addition to all this we have the problem of popular attitudes (which we've seen parodied in this thread already) to the issue which boil down to wanting to brush the problem under the carpet, decry anyone saying there is a problem as a racist, or just diminish the problem as insignificant. Surprisingly, that doesn't seem to be working any-more...

RIP indeed, and hopefully the bastards who did it, and anyone who aided them, are stopped and stopped fast, by whatever means.

But the cartoon is trite at best, and a load of bull at worst. 2Nothing" is not being done. Police and security services have never been so active around Europe against terrorism. It's near the top of the agenda every time leaders meet. Everyone wants it to stop, not just those who want no refugees.

It would be more accurate to say that the people termed "racists, bigot, hater" are those who can't see any difference between average Muslims and Muslim extremists, not people saying "stop".

If you draw parallels between attacks in the West and the Ulster Unionist reaction to the IRA , history indicates this might unfortunately be what eventually does happen. Those with that mentality will eventually find justification in blaming whole communities. And that will increase ballkanisation. A lot further down the road but the pace of attacks is accelerating. I think we need to learn from history before history is repeated.
