You can only assume something major will need to be fixed to clear the NCT.

Anybody selling a car with less than five months left on the NCT would sell it alot easier with a new NCT, which you can get anytime now.

I know the Saab, it was taken as a trade-in in the last few days. There was a right scrape on the passenger side rear door IIRC, which shows up in the photos.

AFAIK the basics were done in terms of servicing etc in recent years but the owner hadn't bothered with the scrapes on the basis that he was getting rid of it.

Edit - just noticed there a fair bit of tax left which would be typical of the guy that owned it - he threw on 12 months tax in August 2016, not exactly money no object, but the car was looked after. His missus drove the car for a few years. If I was in the market for a such a car I'd be interested in it.

What's your annual mileage, Trojan? What else are your requirements except it has to be presentable, and presumably under €2k? Auto / manual? Size of the car?

Yeah I thought it was something like that. Also I've heard that sometimes the refurb doesn't work, so even if that's low probability it's still too much risk. The car also needs new front pads (€100+) and rear shoes (€150 minimum but likely closer to €250 because I like decent rubber underfoot).

Between all that and upcoming 2.5L tax renewal, sadly a non-Msport E39 becomes an uneconomic repair. I'm looking at seeing if it's worthwhile parking it up somewhere for a couple of years rather than selling to a breakers, but that's another issue.

I'm doing petrol mileage but I can't claim VAT back on petrol, which along with every other way drivers of older petrols gets screwed, is starting to piss me off. My journeys are fine for diesel - they're infrequent but long enough to avoid DPF issues.

I'd love a presentable 130+BHP auto estate 1.9-2.0 diesel with a tow-hitch - that's for carrying bikes. I don't have many hard requirements, and I'd even consider coupes, 2 seat commercials, and a sub-2L petrol. A 2007+ would probably be good for insurance reasons. This might be unfair, but I'd like to avoid a Passat.

In your particular case a 130bhp mk4 golf van makes alot of sense from an economic perspective.
Cheap tax, reliable, comfy and pokey enough.
(remapped itd be alot faster than an auto 525i)

Check injectors for leakage,check tailgate wiring loom,check for evidence of on time oil changes.
Apart from that theyre a grand car.
