Rescue 116 Crash at Blackrock, Co Mayo(Mod note in post 1)

Contact lost just before 0100 off the west coast of Achill island on a rescue mission.
Search in progress including all available ships and Rescue 115.

Hopefully a positive outcome to this.

Please keep replies civil, and respectful of the crew and their families.

Please do not speculate as to any cause unless you have a factual basis to do so (and can back it up with information released to the public).

There will be zero tolerance for troublemakers or those that choose to ignore these guidelines.

There are other moderator messages in the thread, as a result of issues that have arisen, and we will be less forgiving going forward, due to the ongoing sensitivity of this incident

And a shout out to the support people. Listened to a report on the radio this morning about the wrap around support the community are offering to those on the search.
My family and I witnessed and benefitted from this and the work of the SAR people. Extraordinary warmth and support from a coastal community in a time of tragedy.

Why is RTE still reporting that the recovery activity is taking place on the "Western face of the island", as stated in earlier reports and repeated just now on News @ 6?

I just don't understand it. The reason I asked this earlier and am repeating it, is that if RTE gets such a detail wrong, how many other details are they mis- reporting?

They also just reported that the divers are being tended out of the Samuel Beckett. That surely cant be the case, as the SB has been running patterns all day (see attached track).

The Gearoidin has been just East/SouthEast of the island all day, and if divers have only 10 minutes below for any dive, it stands to reason that this is the vessel actually tending them.

These blatant confusions are being propagated by the Media source of record, and if they cant be trusted in terms of the small details, how can we believe other things they say?

At the moment, we don't know exactly how the operation is being run. As you rightly say, the Becket has been moving around all day, (I've been watching it), whereas the other vessels, 2 or 3 of them are much closer in and not moving much, but the coverage is showing small fast RIB's moving around the place, and they probably don't have AIS on them, so we may not be seeing all of the activity on line.

You'd kind of hope that with news crews on scene, and all the other technology that they have, it would be possible to get the basics right, but that's what we're unfortunately up against.

You're absolutely correct: we don't know how the operation is being run. However, when the national broadcaster paints pictures that are clearly illogical and improbable as "the oracle", it simply infuriates me, because I, like I'm sure many 000's of others want facts in respect of this awful tragedy, and we're constantly told that practically all the other news outlets are propagating "gutter journalism" in this matter such that we can't depend on them for truths. So if the "National broadcaster" cant be bothered with basic accuracy in reporting in the week when its leader brazenly suggested that we as the Irish people should be happy to double our TV licence contribution, my mind boggles.

Anyway, no doubt many on here will consider this rant "off topic", and in large measure it is. However, if none of the official sources can be trusted for accuracy, then its no wonder that places like thread can sometimes become fraught...

Observation re RTE quoting search being on the west side of blackrock. Footage on tv looks towards blackrock. Search boats are to the left of the picture. They are then incorrectly quoting west...

They found the black box, hopefully the families can get closure and find out why these hero's died.

If the boats are as you say to the left as you look at it? then as you look at it that would be west.

And I think its great that they found the black box. And yes, it may help the families in some way, but for me it's much more important that it was recovered, apparently in "good" condition, so that the cause of the tragedy can be established and may prevent the loss of other similar aircraft and their crews in Ireland, UK, and/or worldwide.

Looking west from Blacksod towards Blackrock and forgetting to re orientate would give the appearance of being west but is, as stated, is south east.... just a possible reason for the reported error. Or it could just be bad journalism....

Mod Update I am on the horns of a very hard dilemma. There are a number of posts over the last 90 minutes relating to reports being carried by the Irish Mirror, but the Mirror themselves have stated that the AAIU and related bodies have not confirmed their report.

I may end up regretting this, but in the absence of any confirmations of this story from any other source, I do not want this forum to become a source of what may turn out to be false news, and I certainly do not want anyone close to or related to the families of the 116 crew to get wrong or unconfirmed reports from here, and despite what some may say, there are family and friends of the 116 crew that are aware of this forum and this thread.

I have not in any way deleted or modified the posts that are at present not visible, and if the reports are confirmed by another source, I will be re instating them in the same place and order as they were in.

This may appear harsh, but I am operating within the very clear guidelines that have been given to me by the admiistrators of Boards.ie, and if you are unhappy with their ruling, I can only ask that you take it up with them in the Feedback Forum.

Until clariification has been given one way or the other, please do NOT refer to the Irish Mirror or related stories.

I think that is the correct call. There is a reason no info has been released from all the various credible news agencies operating in Blacksod as well as the AAIU. Meas mor to all involved & please god we will have some positive news tomorrow
