The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

Nice pics over on the UK GTi forum from JoeA3, I presume, showing the indium grey on an R. And a lovely CS in Reflex Silver - I want to see more pics of that. Is it for sale??

yeah, here's Indium on a new R - in Frank Keane's Deansgrange. Great colour imo. The Golf was seriously crying out for a nice grey.

Speccing up - Santiagos, manual, innovation pack (but I'd like the bigger screen, dunno if possible with this pack) €934 for the upgraded touch screen with the pro nav and 8 speakers, I would have otherwise spent €814 ordering the 10 speaker 400w upgrade but if an extra €120 odd gets as above and the sound is also improved then maybe you could scratch the 10 speaker upgrade off? The active info is standard, heated seats come with innovation pack, extra cameras, lane assist etc not worth it. Adjustable dampers, too expensive, sunroof too expensive.

Those LED headlights, they've replaced xenon technology now have they?

They're very well specced to the fair - anything else I've missed?

(Can't believe the pretorias are only €100 extra on the R!!).

- Get the DSG. It makes the car imo.
- Brescias are nicer (or less worse) than the Santiagos (again imo).
- Yes you can get the bigger screen for about 900 quid. I wouldn't tbh.
- no, the upgraded screen does not include Dynaudio. I'd get Dynaudio before I'd spec the screen.
- rear camera is definitely worth it.
- dynamic lights / lane assist is a really cool feature.
- Adjustable dampers is also worthwhile and again I'd have this way ahead of the big screen nav. Especially with 19's.
- Keyless entry would also be on top of my list. Great feature, would hate not to have it now.

Yes, the LED's have replaced xenons.

The main reason I've left off the big toys such as dampers, leather, DSG etc is the monthly cost jumps well up and is getting far too close to a new model 5 series.

@JoeA3 how does this grey compare to the CSG on the pre-FL? I really wanted to like this new grey but I think it might be too dark. I thought the CSG was too dark.

@MarkN - nice spec but as JoeA3 suggested Keyless is very good once you've used it. We have it on the family estate and I wouldn't do without it. It's a pity it's not standard anymore though. What about an alarm?

Personally, I'll be going manual instead of DSG as I want the interaction and the cost of it can go a long way to other extras.

I see where Tom Murphy in Waterford have a White Silver GTi up on Carzone. That doesn't look a bad colour imo.

Carbon grey was a GTI/D only colour. Never on the R. It is/was fairly dark with a bluey / green tinge in it in some lights. Lots of examples of it around.

You'll see Indium grey already on the roads, I've seen lots of Passats in that shade. It's lighter than CSG, more "grey", wouldn't have that bluey/greeny tinge.

Question a little related to the GTI. I've an Octavia RS diesel, pondering swapping it for a facelift petrol. The only thing on the price list is the normal 230 but the dealer hasn't been able to get an answer on the 245 with the dif.

If I was to just go with the 230 without the dif...Would it be really noticeable? I know nailing it that I'd notice it and quite liked the older model 230 with the dif. Might even go for a combi as a holdall on this one yet too so might make even less sense going for the 245. Any thoughts?

Did you mean LSG in the pre facelift R. Limestone grey was very nice/discreet and not many of them about.

Whatever about 230 v 245... that new face they've grafted onto the Octavia... not good.

I thought the only petrol version they did (pre facelift at least) was the "PP" version. That's changed?

I'd be a bit concerned about residuals on a petrol one of those too.

If I bought an R, my mind was changed in recent times from going nowhere near passed Lapiz Blue to only thinking of going for LSG. It's kind of similar to the carbon steel in that it's a bit of a chameleon in different lights and for a "grey" it's bloody gorgeous!

They did a 220 but once the 230 came last time they stopped selling the other one. I'm not the biggest fan of the face either to be honest but I'm struggling to find something with the space, spec and a little poke. The 9.2" nav coming free is appealing too for me.

How about the 300bhp Leon wagon mentioned earlier in this thread? Probably a good few more quid....

I'd consider it yeah, but even basing prices on the old model Cupra ST it gets on to mid-40s with the spec I'm after and with the ST coming in 4x4 only now the vrt will probably push that up nicely too. Becomes an awful lot of money for a Seat, and although you're getting more of a car it could easily be the bones of 10k more than the Skoda. Realistically out of budget too tbh.

Awd is merely an option on the Leon ST. I have the pricelist. Awd St dsg is 45k. Normal fwd St dsg is 41k. Both prices before any options.

Interesting, didn't realise they were going to be fwd also. Still going to be a lot more but worth looking into all the same.

The new frontend on the Octavia is not great.. but, I think it will grow on people. The interior and infotainment is meant to me much improved on the facelift too. It'll probably be another 3-4 months before VRS orders are been taken on it tho.

Hah, yeah.. the TSI Passat was reasonable up to 4k RPM... but after that the power band flatlined big time. Yet to drive the 2l TSI.. not surprisingly no dealers had a demo

Two lovely spec 141 GTis for sale in Howth at the moment. I think the asking is a little high at 30k but Im sure there'd be some room for negotiation. Also, one seems to have 3 Santiagos and 1 'something else' which I find surprising to say the least- or maybe its just my eyesight!

They even took a close up of one of the correct wheels. Ad also says the car has 298bhp via a power upgrade (remap?). Either way I couldn't buy that car with an odd wheel, it would drive me mad every day.
