Rescue 116 Crash at Blackrock, Co Mayo(Mod note in post 1)

Contact lost just before 0100 off the west coast of Achill island on a rescue mission.
Search in progress including all available ships and Rescue 115.

Hopefully a positive outcome to this.

Please keep replies civil, and respectful of the crew and their families.

Please do not speculate as to any cause unless you have a factual basis to do so (and can back it up with information released to the public).

There will be zero tolerance for troublemakers or those that choose to ignore these guidelines.

Let's hope it was a sea ditching and not a gear box or mechanical fault,the lads would have survival suits,life jackets and person locater beacons on them.i fly in these choppers offshore and they are able to float if ditches into the sea

The Coast Guard can confirm that there has been an incident involving one of our Search and Rescue (SAR) Helicopters off the west coast of Ireland.

At approximately 1am contact was lost with one of our SAR Helicopters. A major sea search is ongoing off the county Mayo coast approximately six miles west of Blacksod. SAR Helicopters from Sligo and Shannon are on scene along with the Air Corps Casa. Ballyglass and Achill all weather lifeboats (ALBs) are on scene along with five local fishing vessels.

The Sligo based Coast Guard helicopter R118 completed an early morning medical evacuation (medevac) of a crewman requiring urgent medical attention from a UK registered fishing vessel approximately 150 miles west of Eagle Island in County Mayo. Owing to the distance involved safety and communication support, known as Top Cover, was provided by the second Coast Guard helicopter, the Dublin based R116.

The search operation is being coordinated by the Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Centre in Malin Head. Both helicopters refuelled at Blacksod prior to transiting to the scene.

Yes, and more.

Helicopters like these are subject to the most stringent monitoring of mechanical parts due to the catastrophic consequences of any major failure.

On RTE he said the went from Dublin as far as 10 miles past Blacksod and then turned around to refuel at Blacksod and didn't make it. Why did they go 10 miles past refuelling spot to turn around. He did said this was normal procedure and to a layman like me it seems odd.

Yes, FDR and CVR plus many more airframe accelerometers and sensors than most airliners. The data is uploaded to Sikorsky frequently ( weekly? ) so that they can identify trends across the fleet.

If it was the guy on Morning Ireland, he was hopeless. He said it was a Scottish trawler, when it was Russian according to the Coast Guy statement. He wasn't prepared and seemed to just make it up as he went along. He shouldn't have been talking on national radio as he appeared to be a local lad who got the call and wanted a big day out.

Why didn't the Coast Guard have a rep? That seems odd to me for such a major incident, especially as we are ~6 hrs in.

They may have both refuelled at the start of the mission, with 116 planning to refuel before returning to Dublin.
