The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

Maybe a set of prets if you want to keep it OEM? Pricey though.

Imho, non-OEM wheels on any new or nearly new premium car such as BMW, Audi, Mercedez Benz, or a VW Golf GTI really diminish it's appearance. Maybe not so much on older models.

While I see where you guys are coming from in certain instances, I can't say I agree all too much. Now while I think it's difficult to find a style that does suit and complement the newer cars more than in the past, there are certain brands and styles that do suit them nicely.

Personally I think the Austin's aren't that nice of an alloy to begin with and the only ones that are for the performance Golf's are the Pretoria's. But I wouldn't put Prets on a GTI.

Overall it's all about personal taste I guess and we all have our own. That's why my car will be different to others (I hope) and will look the way I want it to. If we all had the same opinion it would be an incredibly boring world (not to mention VAG scene, as they're not exactly out there in design as standard!).

Prets are / were an option on the Clubsport and standard on the CS-S. So I think they'd be a nice choice for a standard GTI if you could get them at the right price.

They are an option now on the clubsport, but I still wouldn't put them on a "standard" GTI. (and that's coming from someone who put RS alloys on their ST for a decent period of time :P )

It's obviously my own personal opinion though.

The car is getting expensive. I spec'd up an R to roughly my own car's spec and its coming in at about 52.5k. Pretty sure mine would have retailed at around 48.5k ish 18 months ago. 4 grand more!

I see the alacantara seats option is there for the GTI but with no pricing yet. That's what I'd be going for (rather than the cloth or full leather).

I think you need to plug in to use Android Auto or Apple Car Play. I would imagine most people who know what capacitative charging is and have it on their phones would be likely to be plugging in to use one of these features so I can't imagine there will be very many takers for this.

Bizarre that SAFELOCK is available with the alarm but not with the keyless entry and the two (alarm, keyless) are mutually exclusive in the configurator.

Just went onto VW site, specced up a GTI with Santiagos, alcantara, 171 pack, alarm etc etc - it doesn't seem to give a price. Is the carbon grey colour gone? Something like the below, I think I could part with the 635 for something like this. Maybe.

Carbon grey has been discontinued.

There's no price up there yet for the alcantara so that's causing "no price" in the final summary for you too. I'd say the alcantara would be ballpark €900.

Configurator doesn't add in the "delivery charge" either which is €775.

For me, adding the alloys triggers something called "Customized installation" which has "no price available", causing the overall price to disappear. Build it without the alloys and just manually add the cost yourself.

When an R is "only" approx 5K more would those looking at the GTI be tempted to stretch...?

I'm looking at a new GTI PP and haven't been tempted by the R. It's a bit too "flash" for me and I prefer the style of the GTI with the red accents vs the R with the silver wing mirrors and quad exhausts. The R would be a bit more expensive to run between tax, insurance and juice. I thought about the GTI CS (Frank Keane have one in Liffey Valley), but again a bit thirsty, loud and flash for me.
I've given a demo Mk7 GTI PP a fairly good workout around some country roads and think that it's more than enough car for me. I think a part of me always wanted a GTI and the R isn't strictly a GTI.

Purely subjective and partly superficial superficial reasons, I know!

17 cars I've had. 4 have been diesel.

Forgot the €800 speaker option actually.

I got errors when I swapped the wheels for the other 19s to make sure I had the right ones.

Having had both...
- I'd be the first to admit I prefer a lot of the GTI styling touches (the red bits), the brushed chrome bits inside (rather than black in the R). I prefer the R wheels (the prets). The new GTI has some god awful standard wheels... the 19's are a lot better but not as nice as the R's prets imo. I kinda like the silver mirrors. I don't think the R is flashy at all... quite the opposite really. Pick a subtle colour (not lapiz blue or white) and it looks like a regular Highline. No one other than car nuts knows what an R is whereas most have at least heard of the "GTI" moniker.

- tax and juice is a bit more costly for sure. Not sure what tax bracket the new GTI PP will fall under though? Insurance is exactly the same.

- there's a few things that are standard in an R that you need to pay a fair whack for on a GTI (19's, an alarm)

Having said all that I wouldn't be adverse to trying a GTI again myself.

They have a Club Sport down in Vw Wexford. It looks lovely but at €57k I don't think I could ever afford one.

Typical salesman sh1te talk. Any wonder they have it sitting there 5 months.

That car was imported from the UK and has every (UK) option ticked... stuff you couldn't even spec here like the black prets.

Similar to what ST said above. I too am looking at getting a GTi-PP. The R styling is too OTT for me; I hate those Cadiz wheels, the Pretorias are a must, and I'm not a fan of the quad exhaust.
A few other minor things are that the R boot is smaller, the GTi is small to begin with and I could just about live with that and I don't think you can put a towbar on an R - not for towing anything but for an external bike rack.
I've driven both the R and the GTi-PP and although the R was the more comfortable, had more power and grip it just isn't a GTi. As a kid I used to go to look at the Mk2 GTi in the local VAG/Merc dealer and want one, so nostalgia and heritage play a big part for me personally.
I also want a manual and the road tax on the facelift manual R is scandalous! I plan on keeping this car for a long time so that comes into the equation for me.

The GTi-PP is supposed to be 148g/CO2 so road tax should be €390 but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
For others, the facelift GTi has turned up at some dealers in the UK, pics on the UK GTi forum - linked from the VWROC forum. I wonder when we can see it here?

The much hated cadiz wheels are no more on the facelift. There's a different standard 19" now, not too unlike the GTI 19" brescia.

Yeah it's loaded up with pricey options (off the top of my head - bucket seats, pro navigation, prets).

Were there many pre-facelift PP GTi's sold here?

Keeping an eye on the market as I'd like one in a couple of more years but there are not many out there at all, it looks like there were more R's sold really. Also many of the non-PPs are down badly on spec, no Xenon's, 18's etc.
