Does anyone know what the ethnic Traveller Status statement actually means?

I'm just a bit puzzled by this impending statement by Enda Kenny, being delivered shortly.

Does it change any law, does it change the Constitution?

Does anyone know. Information is thin on the ground really AFAIS.

Just to address the OP.

As I understand it travellers were already treated as a de facto ethnicity, the recognition yesterday was more or less a media photo opportunity to get various civil rights commissions off the government back.

In regards to legislation the Irish times reports that no new legislation is required, which suggests existing legislation covers this.

Writing as an elderly person, nearly 80, living in rural Ireland I am not nor ever have been intimidated by travellers.

Was threatened/attacked once by someone who it emerged was a settled traveller but that was just him. And the Garda sorted him.

Had more trouble in my life with non travellers... far far more!

We have rights period. Up to us to use them. On all sides.

So please spare your hearts and flowers on our behalf!

Really? I spent a while yesterday at Knock chatting to two travellers, mother and daughter, who had troubles. Will do that for all I meet.

A similar story would be a few travellers that my sister knows. They're cousins of the Moate Joyces and, from my few encounters, decent fellas. There is little need for elaboration. If any family is existing solely on social welfare, it is that, just existing.
The visual evidence is that many traveller families have a much higher disposable income than this.

I admire any Traveller families who have done well eg The Fureys, so I am quite content that I am not racially motivated in my assessment of their behaviour.
I have a good number of experiences of them, whilst living in a rural area. none of them positive. I am looking across at a neighbours house that was robbed over 50 years ago. Convicted from fear someone says I'm jumping to conclusions. Many other experiences since then.

I was listening to the radio yesterday and someone was saying they can no longer be treated as a Minority as a result and it made no sense to me how could this be so when they are now officially being recognised as an Ethnic Minority. Either way on a day to day basis most of the problems Travellers encounter are down to a socially created attitude, that socially created attitude in a lot of cases is driven by Traveller behaviour not their culture. Nobody ever shouts about the good deeds the Travelling community do but that said people don't fall over themselves about the good deeds done by any community. Look at the papers its all gubberment this, gubberment that someone up in court ,bad news is the only news.

Help!!!!

When I was growing up the travellers would come to town for a few weeks over summer, set up home on the outskirts. They never really caused any trouble. The most people would complain about would be the mess they would leave behind. Unless there was a funeral then all bets were off. I made friends with some of the kids every so often when they would be sent to school. My dad used to buy the odd thing of them when they would come knocking the door....still does some times. I left Ireland in 95, been back every year for a few days so never paid any attention. Moved back 3 years ago. Cant believe the change. Seen kids cycling up the middle of the road & try to kick a womans car before calling her every name that they could think of. Sulky racing, a horse dies, they leave it on the side of the road. Theres always at least one member of one family going to court in the local paper. Was involved with the after schools for a few months, the younger ones are all lovely but the older the were getting the more dodgy they seemed. One older boy even stole a phone off of one of the women looking after them.
Now the schools dont seem to give them any homework, dont know if its because of the schools neglecting them or whether the kids just dont bother. Hopefully someday they will see that education is important. I'd like to see someone like John Connors using his fame to try helping them get education & try to encourage them to try to integrate. Pavee Point doesnt seem to be any use to them

So historically majority of settled community have shared the same religion with travellers, same language (barring dialectical differences), same skin colour/physicality and up until 500 years ago, the same genealogy but yet they are a separate ethnicity? I note a distinct lack of cultural artefacts that could be called uniquely traveller too. They do posess some questionable customs/rituals that are seperate to the settled majority but so do some of my neighbours and relatives. I think its dangerous territory to start labelling every subculture a distinct ethnicity. Surely by the afore mentioned criteria the west coast island communities could claim their own ethnic status?

According to the results of a genetic analysis done on 40 travellers at the Royal College of Surgeons in 2011, they are as ethnically distinct from us buffers as Icelanders are from Norwegians.

The RCS crowd reckon the travellers split from the mainstream population genetically around a thousand years ago. They have Shelta and Cant languages, but how widely used they are these days, as well as how many current traveller families merely adopted itinerant customs around the time of the Famine, is unclear. The impression I get is while they probably are an ethnic group, not all of them would, strictly speaking, belong to this ethnic group.
