Does anyone know what the ethnic Traveller Status statement actually means?

I'm just a bit puzzled by this impending statement by Enda Kenny, being delivered shortly.

Does it change any law, does it change the Constitution?

Does anyone know. Information is thin on the ground really AFAIS.

There is no change to the Constitution or any law today.
That doesn't mean there won't be in the future.

I'm not sure what difference it makes really. Will they get any more money simply for being another ethnicity? Do Poles or Chinese people receive funding on account of being a different ethnicity?

As for "anti-traveller discrimination". Not sure how that will change. Their education levels are shocking compared to the rest of the population, so I don't see how they're going to be uplifted in the jobs market for example. I also find it hard to see pubs/hotels changing their attitudes because of a change to the list of ethnicities.

Well they have the choice to get their kids educated firstly. Im not so sure they are too worried about the jobs market apart from a small few who do their best to integrate and to be fair are recognised.

the pubs and hotels may not have a choice if they wish to remain open. it may be a case of change their attitude or be dealt with. time will tell, the devil will be in the detail if any.

Is this all coz of the bloke from love/hate who went to america and claimed that black's in america is the same as traveller's in ireland. Black's where discriminated against for no reason, traveller's earned it for decades of criminal activity because they wouldn't just fit into society.

Btw "they just wouldn't fit into society", they were never supposed to. They are different to us in many ways. Hence the recognition that they are an ethnic group. You can't make them fit in. That was never the plan.

Nope it was the bloke from love/hate you might be able to get his show from the RTÉ player, also claimed they where like the native Americans and Mexicans. Fit in as in get a job since sharpening tools is gone, going to school, if they want to be actual travellers then staying in one spot isn't being a traveller and how is schooling going work if they actually did travel?

Hold on now. I dont condone what the IRA done in Northern Ireland but if you took time to read about what the likes of Bobby Sands had to endure all his life you would understand how they took the sword. Intimidation, coercion mixed with a collusion with loyalists and those who were meant to keep the peace (RUC, British Army). You just cannot compare their situation to travellers.

There is many good travellers and many have represented our country but make no mistake, there is a problem within the travelling community. Before they were given any recognition, smart, strong minded, mature, disciplined people needed to sit around a table and address the elephant in the room but that chance has gone now. The knee has been bent by our weakling leader
