The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

Was just looking at the price list and thinking the same! A lot of that stuff was free/standard spec. e.g the reversing camera now €269. Have they reduced the generous spec we've enjoyed for the last few years?

I don't think it's any less well equipped than before. Stuff like the camera, nav and keyless were always part of a cheap (or even free) tech pack that they pushed for the new registrations. Hence I suggested waiting a few weeks, late April / May and I bet there will be revised 172 offers...

And whether you like it or not, you now get the digital / active info dash, so that's a new freebie

I'm looking at a GTI and am inclined to hang on for the Performance Pack, which might not be orderable till May, if this post re UK availability is anything to go by: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=279889.10
The dealer didn't have any better info on when it might be available to order over here.

I'm looking at ordering the PP but I'm also seriously unimpressed with the price increases for things that were a lot less/free 12mths ago as JoeA3 pointed out. Charging €599 for the "innovation pack" is a bit rich.
I noticed too differences from the earlier list in February, where all the option prices were TBC, to the one posted today with prices; the keyless with safelock is not available on the GTi and the option 7AS anti-theft alarm (standard on the Golf R) that forces keyless with Safelock (4F2) is no longer on the new list.
VW Ireland should be giving options to customers to make their purchase as safe as possible! Crazy!!

As I said... mark my words... that "innovation" pack will be €172 in May

And if you really want an alarm (and you probably should), they'll probably spec one for you. Get the option code, etc etc.

What's the difference between keyless with/without safelock? I can't find a good description. Is the 7AS alarm system any better/worse than the WD1 alarm system? They update their pricing fairly regularly so it may be different again by the time the PP is available. I'm hoping the performance pack won't be a massive cost adder, it was about 1350 extra in the Mk7 but it now comes with the additional differentiator of a better gearbox if spec'ing the DSG.

Safelock is deadlocks. Without deadlocks, a thief can smash a window and open door by reaching in and pulling inside door lever. Safelock/deadlocks prevent that. And they aren't standard.

I'm hoping that the GTi-PP's CO2 output won't see it move it into the €570 road tax band to add to the already mighty insult that sees the VRT rate increase to 23% and the resulting price increase.

Question for GTI owners that bought new, did you 'run in' the engine? I have a Superb on order with the same engine and have read mixed reports on the need to run in or not.

There is a section in the manual about running in. It says for the first 1000km, don't use full throttle or go above 2/3rd's of max RPM, then gradually increase to max after 1000km.

Yes, this is what I have read... along with the counter argument that 'running in' was needed back when engines were built with much higher tolerances.

New cars are delivered with a special engine setting to limit revs/speed exactly for this reason...

I thought deadlocks have been standard on all VWs for years? Anyone I've been in over the years had them anyway.

Not in the MK7. They are in the R as the R has the standard factory fitted alarm. Generally speaking, if your MK7 has no alarm, it has no deadlocks.

2 things u shouldn't by a Gti without, Performance pack and alarm with safelock. I found out the hard way about deadlocking been dropped on the Mk7.
I've also had PP and non PP versions. The extra cost is small when u consider the larger brakesize, Diff and power increase.

I wonder about the effectiveness of alarms and deadlocking tbh....

I had a passat, deadlocked etc.. scummers still smashed the passenger window and climbed in (I assume) to steal the pretty crappy RCD510.
I have seen pictures of Golfs with the front window smashed along with the boot glass smashed (lifted the parcel shelf to check the boot for valuables?), two smashed windows instead of one and they still steal whatever they were after.

Alarm... is it a deterrent? If anyone plans to steal the car they will break into your house and rob the keys. If they are blatant enough to smash a window(s) to grab contents and run I doubt they are concerned about a siren.

The most common way to get the car itself is to go for the keys - absolutely. But an alarm / deadlocks are still a good basic first barrier of defence. Otherwise why bother even locking the car

That said, I doubt the casual opportunist thief would know whether a car has an alarm fitted or not. In the case of the Golf there's no obvious visual indication that it has an alarm.

Interesting point... I run in the dublin/wicklow mountains sometimes so would leave my car parked for a couple of hours in laybys etc.. I often wonder is it best to leave it unlocked (never leave anything in it) to avoid a smashed window.

I just think that if scumbags will smash a window if they are interested in something... alarm/deadlocks not likely to deter them.

If its in a very quiet isolated spot, yes... but I'd say most of them would rather avoid attention and triggering a siren would be a last resort (e.g. parked in a busy housing estate).

No more than house alarms (which should be banned imo) car alarms are more of a nuisance than anything, are generally ignored and are a big cause of noise pollution.

On the lookout at the moment in the dealerships for a good spec (xenons,austin alloys) 141 (possible 142) reg gti....but they are rare! Are owners holding on till the facelift arrives before trading in? I'm getting a bit impatient lol!!

Spotted a very nice 132 (I think) on Backroads - I'm not affiliated in any way with the seller BTW. I can try find it if you like.

I only know about it as I was on the look out for a 2nd hand GTI for months and only got sorted 3 weeks ago

Because that was the standard spec until late 2014. Xenons and wheels upgrade cost 1000's extra before then.
