I am on holidays now, so finally have a chance to play a bit.

Arma 3 exile - as always playing with friends, not as engaging as we played first time. A bit bored now, but still come on when lads on.

Killer floor 2 - loving it to bits. My go to game, when I just want to shoot stuff in the face. Sometimes play it with a buddy. Its a shame we have to go public game and can't set it up just two of us.

Prison architect - I got it ages ago, but never really played it. Always wanted too, but got scared away by all complexity. Two days ago I put on my big boy pants and finally started playing it after watching a few videos.
First prison went in flames, but I started brand new one today and I finally got the hang of it! It's functional and I know what I am doing! I am planing on selling it and start with bigger budget in bigger area. Will be so much easier when I know what I need and how plan it out.

Rust - haven't played it since old version properly. Lads wanted to give it a go again as Arma got stale. Joined with them on custom server, but had no clue what's going on. So many changes!
So after everyone went to bed I joined random low pop vanilla server and started from the scratch for the sake of pure learning. I have to admit, they did a great job on it! I think I will ne playing a lot more of it again, specially if lads back in to it. Need to find miskyboy now, but I bet he is smelling his own farts somewhere in xbox forum.

Been playing Pillars of Eternity. It's great. The writing and lore is brilliant. It has some interesting quests. The stronghold is a great idea and a fun little extra. Not a big fan of the combat but given I was worried I'd struggle at that, having not played many cRPGs, its actually not too difficult to pick up the basics.

Playing Escape From Tarkov alpha & Overwatch in between, took a break from R6 Siege as it was becoming the only game I was playing all the time.

Went old school the last week and beat the two Jedi engine games, namely Star Wars: Dark Forces and Outlaws.

Dark Forces is quite simply a FPS classic. The level design is excellent (other than maybe the confusing sewer level) and it's aged far better than the 3D Jedi Knight games that followed.

Outlaws was excellent as well but feel it didn't quite reach the same level of quality as Dark Forces. It was excellent when it came to the town areas which were open and non linear but the few linear levels just weren't very good with the sniper rifle being too effective against far away enemies whose AI hadn't kicked in. Looks like **** as well compared to Dark Forces, it looked like **** on release as well.

Only got myself a gaming PC again this week after years without one (for example, I thought routing all the cabling behind the motherboard was neat.. I'm told it's standard for years

) so I picked up Battlefield 1 (as the lads play that on Friday nights) and Elite Dangerous so far.

I have stuff like Civ 5, Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, GTA III-V, Sins of a Solar Empire, Company of Heroes, and Euro Truck Sim 2 all in my Steam library though so looking forward to getting back into some of those or newer versions of them (suggestions welcome

)

Any recommendations on a decent joystick though in the €100ish max bracket?

I'm playing 7 days to die a lot lately. Was not expecting much but I was very surprised that the game was as good as it was. Cost just over €20 and was only a 3.5GB download, impressed by how much of a game they managed to fit in to such a small size. Have over 70 hours played and I haven't even ventured onto a PvP server yet.

Pretty much just EU4 these days. Picked up a couple of the expansions that I was missing. Such a great game.

It doesn't matter which flavour of Warhammer 40k game you're playing, smacking things with a Thunder Hammer always feels glorious.

Currently playing Sanctus Reach.

It's a bit like XCom without the base building.
You have a points budget every level and it's up to you to spend it on whichever blend of units.
You play as the Space Wolves and have pretty much the whole gamut of units to choose from.

Ordinary Marines, CQC lads, Terminators, Dreadnoughts, hero units with special abilities, bikes, 3 kinds of tank (APC, battle tank and super-duper APC), anti-tank, lads riding giant wolves...

It's good.
It's less coin-flippy than XCom. There's a similar probabilistic combat mechanic, but it's a far smoother curve.
It makes sense because you've got squads of marines shooting loads of shots.

You rarely completely miss even 40% shots completely. They just tend to do a lot less damage.

I haven't pulled any of my hair out yet, so on that basis I'd say it's a better system than XCom's, which is bull****.:p

C&C collection on origin,picked it up for €6. Most of them run well enough but i did have to use an unofficial patch to get tiberian sun going.

Just doing skirmishes really,no real interest in diving into the campaigns on any of them. The nostalgia is real,brings back memories of hours in front of a crappy PC turtling along and taking an hour or two to get each skirmish done. Not really into fast paced RTS so this suits me well enough. Have never tried generals series so saving that till last. Might even give the fps one a go:)

Also back into Minecraft trying out packs,settled on Project Ozone 2. Havent played in about a year so great to have a mess around with new mods.

I wanted to get another playthrough of the Witcher 3 before ME: Andromeda comes out and takes over my life.

But, you can't just start halfway, so I had to play through 1 and 2 as well so I'd have all the import goodies and avenues open.

1 was enjoyable enough but a bit of a slog.
I'm pissing through 2.
I never liked the combat before but for some reason it's clicked this time around.
I'm only playing on Normal difficulty (2 of 4 or 5 difficulties) whereas even Deathmarch on W3 is fairly manageable, so it's not perfect and the combat can still be erratic, particularly the boss battles, which can be a load of bull**** at the best of times but now I'm not just legging through battles to skip to the story, I'm having to make meaningful decisions about my preparation and equipment and the skill tree feels useful.

I'm playing the Blue Stripes storyline rather than the Scoia'tael.

It's a funny old game. I decided early doors that the Scoia'tael were racist murdering bastards and even though I sympathised with their plight, their impending genocide, the fate of Vergen and all that, it was always tough to actually side with them.
Well, the Blue Stripes storyline isn't any better in that respect.

I suppose it's a good thing that you're left agonising over every decision and usually you end up with at best bittersweet victories.

Mostly, the Witcher 2 is a game where you have to choose your flavour of defeat.
It's a fantastic story that really subverts a lot of the expectations you'd have for fantasy, just as all the while it toys around with the usual fantasy clichés.

Apparently Sapakowski isn't a fan of the games but I think they really capture the tone of the books.

Last thursday night I got myself two games. Gta 5 and factorio.

Played 10h in factorio and cant wait to play it again on my day off tomorrow and watched loading screens for about 3 hours in gta 5 and kind of gave up.

Factario was one of those games I really wanted to get, but waited for sale. Damn thing never on sale, so sold my stuff in steam inventory and payed full price. No regrets. Damn thing is just so cool. Have to say, that watching some lets plays of it helps a lot. Already restarted to my second attempt as after watching quill18 on youtube I realised how dumb my efficency was and learned so many things. On my second attempt and really see how much more I can improve. So damn addictive.

Gta 5 online was one of those games that I could not understand. Why its so popular?! I finished single player when it launched on ps3. Did not bothered with online as loading times so damn painful. The reason I gave it a go again was that its pc version and surely this stuff had to be ironed out. Well... no... took me a day and a whole night to download thing as rockstars own servers are pure ass. I regret saving 7eu and buying a key, not steam version. In game the loading times are as abysmal as,they were on ps3!!! Try to connect to group, wait, wait for it to fill, wait, try the scenario one time, fail, someone quits, go back to waiting, get sick of it, leave group, wait even more.... **** this.
I have to admit, it was employable to play, but the amount of just pure idle waiting is killing it.

Didn't enjoy it and gave it a whack last night, Jailer just frustrated me, probably because I can't parry, but it's clicked and I love it.

It's so weird, so colourful and so satisfying.

I definitely recommend giving it a whirl

That is one of the reasons I do not play GTA V online. Loading times are a joke and I also keep getting sent back to single player every so often. Heists are fun though.

I am still a little pissed they never brought out any single player DLC as it is an excellent single player game. I often just boot up the game and drive around and visit random places. The AI is good as well I often when using Trevor stand near woman and say stupid things to them and they either run off or the police so up.

Hitman 2016 since it got its linux support with relaxed DRM and was on sale. Game needs a lot of work and refinement but it's not exactly bad. Locations look nice. Framerate is worse than The Evil Within which is a new record for bad performance.

Warframe a little bit here and there. Been slowly losing interests because of the direction it's taking and how so many things still aren't fixed or reworked.

MGSV. MGO3 more specifically. It's not even that bad when the connection is ok and you don't get a terrible team. Konami still doesn't seem to want to pay for servers so peer to peer still make it fairly awful experience.

DOOM 1995 w/ mods. Project Brutality still fun as ever. Couldn't set up a multiplayer session for me and a friend, though. Just kept trying to connect forever

Huge shame since I know it'll be amazing coop with mics.

Chivalry. I got a bit back into it when I saw For Honor footage which just looked like a console designed, casualised version of it in 3rd person. Still a few good servers. Shame they never added mics though. Text chatting is meh. Can't talk strategy quickly enough with team.

So after sinking 100+ hours into 7 days to die I wanted to get something more GPU intensive.
Had my eye on Rust or Planet Coaster, took me awhile to decide but I needed that old RCT nostalgia trip.

Truly blown away by the game. The graphics and lighting/atmosphere are superb, the guests are actually interesting and everything seems to have such loving attention to detail. For nearly 40 euro I had high expectations, but I really am delighted to see such a game that is clearly crafted with a lot of love.

No surprise if it was the thread for it! There's post purchase rationalisation after all, especially on forums. Then again I don't stand by the statement that they're similar, they just seem it. The fact that there's lockon proves they're different fundamentally. They're the same in that its based on a rhythm of exchanges, though. Similar to fighing games. Although fighting games and Chivalry seem like they do it better.

He makes some good points but he's not always comparing like with like.

Stealth games aren't the same as a more straightforward shooters.

There's a design decision sometimes made with them to almost design them like puzzle games and there's nothing particularly wrong with that in itself.

The broader point about dumbing down, aiming at children and going for the lowest common denominator isn't wrong though.

Mack generally has an industrial sized pair of rose-tinted glasses on when he goes off on a rant about shooters.
He has this semi-religious notions about the purity of shooters as epitomised by things like Quake 3 Arena, but just like pacman or space invaders, older simplistic games are left behind when their gameplay becomes stale.

I don't think older shooters seeming better is from nostalgia. I've played some older titles that I never had before and they're are shockingly better than anything these days. I've said it before but Doom 1995 with some mods (Project Brutality my absolute favourite) is mind blowingly more fun compared to anything similar on the market.

And yes it's better than DOOM 2016... by a lot in fact.

In contrast, one of my absolute favourite shooters from the past is Goldeneye and although it's fun for nostalgia... on its own it's bloody awful and has not aged well at all.
