Tree rings.

Hey guys,

Bit of an odd question. Anyone know if there is somewhere I can go, close to Galway city where I can find a fallen tree or stump that has visible tree rings? Ideally it would be an old tree with 100-ish rings. I want to measure the rings as part of a project.

Is there anywhere around galway city or close by where I can find a tree or stump like that?

Last time I was in Coole Park in Gort there were lots of large felled trees/stumps with visible rings. Someone else might suggest a closer option though.

If you ask the council, they might let you take down the last couple of trees in Eyre Square.

There is a beech tree stump just at the entrance to Galway Crystal, right on the old Dublin Road. Felled recently, its around 100 years old I'd say.

It's next to Leisureland - it's the one with the bandstand in it.

There's at least one cut mature tree here. There may be two but I can't remember.
I don't know how old it is but, a normal sized person could just about get their arms around it.

Incidentally, does anyone know who did the triskele across the river?

Yep, beech is right by traffic lights, just behind low wall, public access.

Yep, just follow the river and you can't go wrong.
You should keep walking up and have a look at Menlo castle while you're at it.
Enjoy it while it lasts because I think they're putting the bypass through it.

Noticed this tree was missing on my walk Saturday afternoon. It was a grand old tree. Loved the windswept look it had to it. Very sad. Do you know why it was taken down?

It was cut in the last three months. Although it was stagheaded it was still thriving. Council are usually quite good, they assess before cutting, but as a beech, the risk of windthrow is always present.
