Who asked the British to 'protect' our airspace from the Russians or anyone else ?

Seen an article today in the Indo. Now being the Indo you have to take any security or crime reports with a pinch of salt as it's quotes as usual from anonymous 'sources'. But if true it occurred to me - who ever asked the Brits to mind our air space ? Is it up to them if say, a French or Swedish or American or Russian fighter plane were in our air space ? Or is it just the Indo been the Indo

I have little knowledge of air traffic but i doubt international communication of airline routes would have to stop if the nation didn't own the air space. They would have responsibility of their air space but they shouldn't own it, a bit like hiring out a car, it is your responsibility but you don't own it.

We should just buy some of those british aerospace jets they sold to the Saudi's. Although, seeing how those jets are only capable of firing rockets at starving women and children in the rubble of Yemen, they may not work too well against other flying, rocket firing, killing machines

If our incompetent government can't be arsed getting the resources needed so we don't need to go hat in hand to the raf the moment a light breeze enters comes near our airspace then we have no choice but to rely on the brits.
We may as well admit we aren't neutral and ask nato to base aircraft at shannon or galway for these sort of cases.

Always understood that the reason we didn't join NATO wasn't because of a principle of neutrality but because we wouldn't be in a military arrangement involving Britain because of their presence in the North. Also thought we offered a bi lateral military arrangement outside NATO with the USA but they wouldn't go for it.

Is this accurate?

I would wager the cost would be more of the Issue. Military spending is not something most Irish people would support at any significant levels.

No they are turbo props. Could easily catch up with any WWII piston engine.

Of course they'd be left standing by a Russian Tu-95 , a 1950's bomber with propellers.

Tu-160 are a different animal again, unlike the US B-1 they can put the foot down. Also the Russians are big into their cruise missiles so any attack would come from a long distance away.

Anyway this sums it up.

The fact is these Russian planes are flying through busy trans-Atlantic flight paths with the transponders switched off.

Only military radar can pick them up. The collision avoidance warnings on passenger planes will not pick them up.

The only safe method of knowing exactly where they are is to send up jets to shadow them.

The jets can then relay the exact position back to ATC and keep civil traffic clear.

They are at the same crap in the North Pacific as well.

The same goes for any aircraft that does not make radio contact with ATC. There was a case last year of a brand new Airbus en-route to Brazil that failed to make ATC contact and was intercepted in Irish airspace by the RAF and escorted and forced to land in Prestwick in Scotland.

Out of interest, what long range military Radar capability does Ireland have to report they were only 12m away ? Would be very very expensive kit. And since Ireland has no interception capabilities seems odd. Do Ireland even have SAM's ? I'm not talking shoulder launchers.
