They specifically had ports for the GameCube controller on the Wii iirc and it didn't damage the Wii brand, I thought one of the big pluses of Nintendo was the backwards compatibility of their systems.

Personally, I reckon that Nintendo are anxious to starve the notion that the Switch has anything in common with the Wii/WiiU lineup, aside from updates to existing WiiU titles popping up during the early months of the new console.
If they published material and photos showing the Switch working with WiiU Pro controllers it'd be the only things the haters would post, in an effort to stymie the system before it's launched.

Not sure I agree with that sentiment - yes it makes sense not to mention anything about the Wii-U in any Switch marketing material - but providing backwards compatibility with previous controllers could only be seen as a good thing and a goodwill gesture to the millions of Wii-U owners. Don't think it would cause confusion.

I mentioned it ages back but I could have sworn it was mentioned the Wii-U Pro controller was going to be compatible with the then NX. Turns out I didn't read it, I was just psychic, maybe. :P

I emailed their helpdesk and was told I had to go to the store to cancel

Seems like a lot of hassle for 5 bucks, but I don't want someone to miss out, thinking they are alocating a console to me neither

The WiiMote was the focus of all the advertising though, and they were such a huge whoop-dee-doo that there was no real reason to worry about diluting the message. Also, the Wii was not coming off the back of a console that got bogged down in the public's inability to distinguish it from it's predecessor. So patching the WiiMote / Pro Controller (please please PLEASE patch in GamePad support so you can have 2 player couch co-op with asynch screens!) later makes good sense until the Switch beds in as a distinct entity.

(There is a danger that it won't - it's just similar enough in looks to the Wii U that proles and pluggers may still look at it and wonder when Nintendo's next proper console is coming. I still haven't seen an ad on regular telly, which is still a thing for mums and dads you millennial boxsetting stream-monkeys, and they still control many purse strings. And yes, in the cold light of day, I see the need to play down any potential points of vulnerability to bolster developer confidence, and how that affects browser availability in the short term. But it doesn't change the underlying disagreement - gaming purity vs some things to all men.

Seeing them demo motion controls would argue that they still don't want to distance themselves away from it. Was certainly the most confusing part as the world has moved on.
I definitely view the Switch as what the WiiU should have been. A hybrid console that works outside of the room the console is in.

They're generally easy going when you cancel in store. They usually give me cash in the past, although they refund onto your card if thats how you paid which is a bit of a pain.

It's referref to as a "reservation" amount in the email I got from them, not actually a deposit. It's a subtle difference that should help us get the money back

In my experience, they refund it as cash or credit card, however it was paid, up until the release of the item. After that they say they ordered it in for you, so no refund but you can use the credit on another pre order if you prefer, or as general credit if theyre not bring particularly grouchy.

Nintendo's advertising might be a bit off with 1-2 Switch but anyone that has played Johann Sebastian Joust with move controllers which this is obviously aping will tell you how much of a blast this type of game is for parties and multiplayer.

Also developers are saying this 'next gen' rumble really is as good as Nintendo are saying and you are able to do some really crazy things with it.

like retro said ,i think this game will be a laugh at party's or with family.

I think nintendo were right not to bundle this though as it would just give the impression that its not a serious gaming console and just another gimicky one.

By offering it as a seperate item they are giving us the choice whether to get it or not. For me i probably will for a bit of a laugh with the family.

The baby game looks ridiculous, but I still find that 1-2-Switch seems like it might have a good amount of playability to it. Certainly more than I got out of Wii Play back in the day, even if I did only buy it for the extra controller at the time. These in-game tutorial videos that Nintendo are releasing to showcase the game sure do look bad, but actual gameplay on YouTube with gamers from exhibitions and press events make it seem like a lot of fun for at least half a dozen of the games so far, which seems fair enough with an inevitable price-drop. Even the price on launch day still wouldn't make it one of the worst things ever imo, even when I was thinking the worst of the game, it'd just be another early-console fleecing where the distinct lack of depth will long be forgotten when the hardware and dev. for it matures.

While I've seen 1-2-Switch mentioned as a good idea for a pack-in with the console, I wouldn't have minded either if it was say €15-€20 on top of a set of extra joy-cons which most seem to be getting. I realise that probably wouldn't make the most sense, given you get all you need for the mini-games with the console as is, but it would have certainly made me go for it on launch day rather than wait until it has a bit of a pricedrop.

We get it, you don't like it. I'm not a particular fan of it either, some games seem half fun but it seems mostly a barebones game showing the nuances of the new HD rumble. Most people have said it's not worth the full price so no one is defending it that way. How is it a step back in every way? That's a pretty generic statement. It's a tech demo game that maybe should have been a pack in game but the argument against that is also a good one, it's hardly representative of any other game and it's pretty harmless to be honest.

Another few have pointed to clear family fun.

It's a step back into gimmickville. It's nowhere near the gaming experience that nintendoland offered....a generation ago.

It deserves all the vitriol it gets.

Let's not treat it as a cute throwaway budget title.

It's a flagship full price title, and pretty much the only system exclusive on day one. That is appalling

Good article about the lack of browser/Netflix on it. It's definitely an opportunity Nintendo are missing out on without it. It would also put the Switch into peoples hands for longer term use and peoples comfort with a device is something they shouldn't discount.

its actually only the irish places seem to be advertising it at the same price as the rest of the games most uk retailers have it 15 cheaper, it should be noted that gamestop staff have said repeatedly to me that game prices are not set yet that the current one is a guess from the gamestop HQ so it could be cheaper at launch, i got it with a charging grip with the 10 pound off on amazon a few weeks back so was ok playing that for the craic at parties. it probably should have been a pack in but if those who are so apposed to it existing in the first place would ye have even wanted it bundled in? ye clearly wouldnt have even opened it and it could have brought the console price up to around 350 to cover the costs of it

They won't be cheaper in gamestop they always gouge on the price of games. I have to laugh every time I'm in there and see the Wii U select games for €30 they are €25 rrp every where else and usually on sale for €20-22

I use the PS4 browser to watch my football on when I am not near my Smart TV, having the option to do so with the Switch would be nice...

Been reading over the browser discussion in here. I remember the XB1 was criticised heavily by people during its first presentation when all they talked about was TV and other features.

A lack of internet browser on the Switch is a pretty stupid reason to cancel a pre-order or let it be a deciding factor as to whether or not you'll be getting one at launch.

I doubt anybody sat down and said, "yeah that Zelda trailer looked amazing but seriously... where's the web browser?"

It's a gaming device and should be treated as such. It's just a very short stick people are using to beat the Switch with. We live in a society whereby people have at least 1 handheld device (phone/tablet) to browse the internet with so losing out on a browser is not going to kill Switch sales nor should it.

Fairly pathetic reason to hate on the Switch. The 3DS didn't come with a browser until 3 months after launch or so and it didn't kill my interest in that handheld.

Anyway, was listening to IGN's 'Game Scoop' podcast this morning. A listener emailed in with a really interesting question regarding the most important title for the Switch.

Many of the contributors went with Zelda and Splatoon but the listener suggested that FIFA 18 could be the most important catalyst in terms of 3rd party support.

I tend to agree. If EA Sports offer us a console quality version of FIFA akin to XB1 and PS4 that can be played on the go, I'd absolutely support the crap out of that.

The potential for on the go tournaments with mates and various meet ups has serious appeal if they get it right.

Could pave the way for other ports on the Switch from 3rd parties. I just hope it's not a watered down version.
