They planted them based on which county you were living in 2000. For the Galwegians amongst us; they are planted in two young forests just south of Loughrea in the Slieve Aughty mountains.

Millenium Forests

As part of the millennium (year 2000) celebrations over 1500 acres of native woodland were designated as "People's Millennium Forests". This native woodland (divided into 16 forests around the country) include newly planted areas that have been using native Irish seed and the restoration of native woodlands.

As part of the celebrations, a native tree was planted free of charge on behalf of each household in Ireland. A total of 1.2 million native trees were planted. Every home was issued with a certificate giving details about the tree planted for each family and where it is located. It is not possible to locate individual trees but each household will still be able to find which forest their tree was planted in. You can check which forest your tree is located.

The People's Millennium Forest project is managed by Coillte, in partnership with the Woodlands of Ireland and the Forest Service.

As long as they are there for future generations.

Were we supposed to make a profit out of this or what? I doubt it, it was a publicity thing, but anyway, trees are fab. Apart from Leylandii. Just to mention.

My one, being in Dublin, was planted in Shelton Abbey. Our family land borders the Mayo forest and provided my aunt with a steady stream of firewood for years

I stopped in at the one in Kerry, near Kilgarvan and was disgusted to see an overcrowded stand of Alder. That was about 10 years ago and I can't imagine it being any better today.

Well that was 10 years ago. There's a chance things might have improved.
