Never got the reddit hype and the journal is what I currently have, its only ok.

Maybe going via the browser is the way to go.

I have the BBC News app, and whenever the app sends a breaking news alert, it notifies by playing the BBC News theme. Anytime I hear it I think"Oh carp, now what's happened."

Yeah Nova unreal, and recently went to Prime for a few bob, its worth it.

I was wondering if it was some sort of sign up program being ran by Google for testing potential software releases.

Side-loading is grand, but doesn't that unlink the app from the play store, stopping future auto-updates?

This is a leak as far as I can tell and not part of an official alpha. I think they only do official betas.
In my experience sideloading apps like this does not unlink from play store and you will get future updates.
Lastly, this did not enable assistant on my Nexus 6. In fact it broke Google now so I removed it again.

Did they really think they'd have enough of a user base to justify a separate product from the people who were going to buy those outrageously priced Pixel phones?

I'm excited for this myself, I had a good experience with assistant inside the Allo app. But the Allo app is a piece of shít. I have never sent a single message through it. It needs serious work to get it useable :pac:
