Thought I'd update the OP with links and stuff for anyone who stumbles across this.

The former Off the Ball hosts have partnered with The Irish Times to do a series of weekly podcasts. They go online each Tuesday and cover a variety of sports, with a number of contributors including Sid Lowe, Richie Sadlier, Gerry Thornley and Shane Horgan.

I always said if I ever saw any of them out and about I'd send over a pint to them. Now I won't, but I will give them a fiver for the pods. Hope whatever app they are going to force me to use is decent.

I'll be signing up anyway. Would obviously prefer if they had found a new sponsor and the pods continued to be free, but don't mind paying a small fee for their content.
If anyone is on the fence trying to decide whether it's worth it to them to sign up for the extra content, bear in mind that if the subscription uptake is poor, chances are there'd be no more free shows either.

Soccer is the filler between all the other sports for a lot of us.

Yeah I'd be in the same boat.
The fiver per month wouldn't put me off, and the lads have given me countless hours of entertainment, but I don't know if I'd have the time to listen to all the extra shows.

I think the football pods do far bigger numbers than the all sport shows so I'd imagine there will be lots of footy content.

Seems they will, judging by this thread.

I'm happy to pay for Netflix, Spotify, etc. Good content, at reasonable prices, is worth paying for imo.

The reason people stream sport so readily is due to the ridiculous costs involved (split across different providers, etc.)

They've confirmed on Twitter that it will be possible to store shows offline and listen to them, and to listen via all the normal podcast options.

A buddy of mine was telling me about some paid for podcasts he listened to (gaming ones), he was able to add them to his podcatcher using customised RSS (using his username & password I think) - wonder if that's an option?

If they have it via website/etc, seems like a step backwards. Maybe they'll aim to have an app at some point?

Will definitely be signing up. Daily podcast gives them a chance to react to stuff as it happens. This is one thing that's sorely lacking when they are only releasing pods twice a week.

I've been lacking in pods at times and this will definitely fill the gap. Great for listening to when going out for a run.

How will the "premium" episodes be made available? I usually listen to them when running so i don't want to be dicking around with web pages during a run.

I wonder did all these future plans have anything to do with how much they seemed to be phoning it in as of late. Well, I thought they didn't seem as bothered as usual.

Even if you do subscribe, you'll still have to listen to them try to flog subscriptions on the regular shows.

It's hard to know what exactly they'll be covering that isn't included in the main/football free shows.

I imagine it'll be a lot of in depth interviews but I'm not entirely sure if that's something I'm willing to pay for even if I do agree that McDevitt is probably one of the better interviewers in the country.

I used to enjoy their OTB days when they would delve into niche sports but again, how many people would subscribe to a podcast that focuses on sports nobody watches.

Bit of a kicker that it won't be available on my podcast app though I'm assuming there'll be a work around with adding in RSS feeds.

It depends on what type of content they're offering. I can't see myself jumping at the opportunity to pay a fiver even if I do really wish the lads well.

That's my thinking too. A fiver for roughly 20(?) shows each month is pretty fair I would say.

Ah that's a pity. Now if it was part of say an IT subscription then I could see this being beneficial.

Hopefully they don't turn their free shows into advertisements for the paid for episodes though...

Best of luck to them but I've never paid for a podcast and I won't be starting now.

They've gone a bit stale lately imho....will be interesting to see how this works out
