Have the government commenced their rollout of FTTH yet? Is there a way to find out when my house would be set up with FTTH?

Fibre cable is being strung in Killarney, Co.Kerry.
The odd thing is that the fibre is hanging on parts of the road where the blue line doesn't go, but only by a couple of metres.

I assume you mean the national Broadband Plan ??

Nope.. Not even gone to tender..

If you are on the eir fibre roll out list then you can get an approximate date on their site. http://www.openeir.ie/Our_Network/#nga-map

If you are not on that list.. Then no..

It should start early/mid 2018 with the winning bidder(s) announce sometime in 2017.

There was 2 KN vans pulled up outside my local exchange building at the time of my passing this Monday afternoon at Inch St Lawernce, Co. Limerick. As far I can see work on the ftth rollout has not commenced yet. According to Eir's fibre rollout map the first ftth connection is early to mid 2017. I wondering will there be a pick in activity in the next few weeks?

My local exchange is down for FTTH early to mid 2017. So I got onto Eir Sales via webchat and was told that the target date for availability was end of March which I'll take as the 31st. Here's hoping

That's the same for us, the runup to the end of March will be frantic by the sounds of it.

hopefully we will see a fresh round of dates next week. 11 exchanges are going live between tomorrow and Friday.

I finally got FTTH installed yesterday...:) I was due for installation tomorrow but they pulled it forward by a couple of days.

Now, there had been a major problem in the area. Most of my neighbour's installations were failing as the DP boxes were not live...eventually they found that there was a fault somewhere and I have to say, fair play to Open Eir/KN...they were out all weekend replacing runs of fibre and rewiring every single DP box in the area so it would be fixed by Monday morning...

One little snag for me though...although the service and speeds that I am getting are fantastic...I signed up to the 1000Mbps package but when I run a speedtest, it maxes out at 244mpbs, and that is connected directly to the router through ethernet...

I told Eir and they ran a line test and said that 1000Mbps is definitely reaching my router, so I don't know why I am not getting more speed...

Again, it is enough for what I need, but as I am paying for the 1000 Meg package, I should be getting close to it...

But apart from that, I am delighted with the FTTH...:):):)

That sounds like it might have been originally done by a clueless crew. Previous reports in thread of teams that didnt know to leave any slack so there were definitely some that blagged on their CVs.

Whats your upload? 250Mb isnt a profile so its more likely a bottleneck than a miss setting. Try downloading this:
https://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ubuntu-releases/16.10/ubuntu-16.10-desktop-amd64.iso
And see what speed you achieve. 250Mb will give you 30MB/s and 980Mb(max real world) will give you about 120MB/s (About 12seconds to download the whole thing!).

Another thing to try would be a couple of simultaneous downloads from different sites using different devices on your local LAN. If each additional download is not affecting the speed of the previous ones, then you know the problem is not the link. There's no guarantee that any site will deliver data at or near 1000Mbit. Nice problem to have, if so.

PS. I contacted Eir sales by web chat yesterday as my area is down for "early/mid 2017". They couldn't tell me anything, which I guess means we are further out than end of March.

could it be the network card inside your computer not up to the task? You need a gigabit ethernet card and have it set to those speeds in Windows 10 to maximise your speeds? Despite that the main thing is you got your connection after all the problems. But this is another problem to tackle, otherwise you'd be best dropping down to the 300meg package.

Absolutely, the main thing is that I am connected and many people would say that you are complaining about getting over 240 meg?? :eek:

But, I just wanted to see why I am not getting nearer the 1000 Meg. It may well be the network card cannot handle it, I thought that the card in my laptop and PC can handle 1 GB but I could be wrong...

If I can't get it sorted, I will just drop down to the 300 MB package.

Eir Fibre broadband looks to be a lot more expensive than Vodafone

Eir 150 mb down and Phonecalls = €75
Vodafone 350 mb down Phonecalls = €55

true, but those with Eir FTTH can't get Vodafone and those with Siro/Vodafone FTTH can't get Eir. By the time this rollout is finished, much more people will have Eir's FTTH.

From what I've read here in the past uptake of Vodafone's FTTH is very low because it is only available in areas with very good internet already such as fast FTTC or Virgin Media.

Ah! so that's Vodafone's price for Siro.

I was thinking that once an exchange is enabled for FTTH then Vodafone could come knocking on your door offering the 350mb deal or something similar

Could .... but apparently have chosen not to sell service on eir's fibre (to date).

If your in contract with Vodafone and Eir FTTH becomes available can you get out of contract?
