Road issues that irritate me.......

Driving in the dark with no lights.......the amount of people who drive around after dark with no lights on is scary!! Do they not realised that their instrument cluster does not display the headlight symbol or can they even understand the displays!

Cyclists and red lights......Heading past Connolly station, passsd the Luas tracks and stopped at red lights between the IFSC and Busaras, 3 cyclists go by and one neary gets run over by a van coming from the right, the little suicide jockey then gives out to the van for not seeing him.....am I missing something here or red lights the new green??

No, you wait behind the tractor and overtake when it is safe to do so.

Same as you should with a cyclist.

I think this has been explained in detail several times on this thread...but for yourself and the slow of learning let us try again.

Cycling two or three abreast actually makes it EASIER for you to overtake (correctly). If 15 cyclists are three abreast that means overall total length is equivalent to 5 cyclists in single file. All of which means you spend less time on the other side of the road overtaking.

I would love to see the fury if a large group of cyclists on their Sunday spin came across 3 joggers side by side across a lane of traffic. With oncoming cars preventing them overtaking.

Let's just say that they are not compliant joggers. Which they would be as you can't run three abreast.

The same slew of cars with the same people in them making their way up the same sliproad at the very same time every single day of the week. Some looking stressed, worried, fretting. Others looking disinterested and bored or just listening to the radio. The odd one might have a second person in the car with them but most don't.

Then come 5 O'clock or half 5 they all make their way around the same roundabout and down the sliproad on the other side and back to whatever housing estate or apartment they came out of the same morning.

They'd be saying stuff like "things are picking up", "the economy is improving" as the bank direct debits their mortgage payment for the month out of their account and keeps them on the threadmill for another month of driving up and down every whole blessed day. What is the f**ing point? Society might miss the work done by 5%-10%, maybe less of those people if they stopped making that journey every day and instead decided to spend time with their families or go for a walk in the woods.

Not sure what you're getting at, I understood your point.

If it's not safe or impossible to overtake then you must wait until it is safe or possible to do so, doesn't matter if its cyclists, cars, buses, horses or any other slow moving traffic in front.

I saw two joggers on the Grand Canal cycle lane, side by side, last week at lunch. If I was on my bike, I'd certainly have had words with them. But again, are you really struggling to understand the difference between a jogger on a dedicated cycle track and a cyclist on the road. Let me know if you need further help here.

Congratulations, Mr Godwin. I'll come back to the cycle lane issues in a sec, but let's just have a look at the provocative language first - 'normal people' - 'lycra louts'.

Perhaps I need to spell this out, but cyclists are normal people. Perhaps you haven't got up on two wheels since you were 12, but lots of normal people do. To suggest that people are abnormal because of their choice of mode of transport is a little bit silly.

And what is this obsession with what cyclists wear? Are joggers jogging along the path in running pants also 'lycra louts'? Are mums doing the school run in lycra also 'lycra louts'? Perhaps you'd like to pay less attention to the lycra-encased asses of the cyclists in front of you, and focus on speed limits and other important road rules.

Now, back to the cycle lane. Others have kindly pointed out the issues with families and dog walkers. I don't know the area at all, but for me, the bigger issue would be the poor design of the cycle path. At the two junctions in less than a kilometre, cyclists would be forced to yield to traffic entering or exiting the side roads. Why would anyone choose a route with two extra junctions over a straight, safe, direct route?

But I suppose the overall premise of your post is even more interesting. It's always funny how drivers who spend large parts of their day stuck behind the car in front crawling along seem to lose all sense of reason when faced with a cyclist's ass for 5 or 10 seconds. They are desperate to pass out the cyclist and get to the end of the next queue of cars, to spend more time staring at the ass of the car in front.

Also, they rarely seem to notice that they spend an awful lot MORE time holding up cyclists in heavy traffic, rather than being held up by cyclists. Do they ever think of moving over to let cyclists filter through? Rarely. If you want to bring some rule about slower traffic moving over to let faster traffic through, try living this rule yourself a bit and move over to let cyclists through.

If you can't handle sharing the road with cyclists, you'd better stick to motorways or build your own private road.

If you could point out the part of my post where I referenced joggers on the footpath or cycle lane, that would be great. Or..... maybe you need some further help? Some eyeglasses to read my post properly perhaps? Or extra reading comprehension?

Everyhting has just become so slow. Limit on our road into town is 80, used to be 100. So now everyone is driving at 70, if even. And when they come to the stretch where once or twice a month the speed van may be it comes to a total crawl. Just to be sure.

Its massively wide and good road too, would put former N roads to shame.

Its depressing.

We used to have a beautiful stretch of 80 km/h road in and out of my town, unfortunately it has been reduced to 60 km/h and a Garda van constantly sits right at the bottom on a hill there.

Has anyone here ever seen a speed limit o a stretch of road being increased?

Or would even the thought of that give old Gaybo a coronary.

Actually I have (shock horror I know). Waterford outer ring road was 60 all the way even tho its dual carriage, proper concrete barrier in the middle, two lanes each way. People gave out stink on radio and to council for months and to everyones amazement it was actually upped to 80 except for the busy narrow part towards Ardkeen. :eek:

Drivers that take a chance and nip through as the lights turn red meaning they end up going through a pedestrian crossing as the green man is on.

Yesterday at the junction of Sundrive Road and Crumlin Road, myself and the children were crossing from Loretto to where DID electrical is. We had the green man and suddenly two cars come belting round the corner. I grabbed my son by his rucksack and quickly dragged him back or he would have been hit. First car drives on 50 meters, driver gets out sees were are Okay and motors on. Driver of second car, while acknowledging we had a green man, is also adamant that he had a green light and that the traffic lights are faulty. I told him he was talking bollocks as I have seen drivers constantly chancing their luck that junction.

I had the first drivers reg no in my head so decided to cross the road to the Garda station and report it. As I was crossing from DID to the Garda station the same thing happened with a car belting through in the direction of the city centre, this time I made sure it was safe before crossing though.

Told the Guard what happened and he said if no one was hit then what did I want them to do about it. He seemed completely disinterested. I suggested that he ask DID for their CCTV, nope. I said I had reg number of river, he said it would be my word against theirs. Eventually he agreed to ask the council to check the timing on the lights.

Yeah, so that's a road issue that irritates me.

I drive through that junction most days & it does my head in seeing idiots chance their arm with the lights knowing there is a pedestrian crossing immediately around the corner. Glad no one was injured.

I've noticed that a lot of people are now crawling on roads that are 100 and have even have a hard shoulder. A speed van parks on main road near me and people slow to crawl passing it but it's a 100 limit, it makes it very easy to overtake them at least. They go so slow I can over take them staying inside the speed limit while we pass the speed van.

I think driving slow gives people a false sense of safety. It does nothing for their driving skill and makes them even less capable of dealing with dangerous situations.
