Official Conor McGregor thread (part 3) *Updated Warning in 1st Post Re:Boxing match

The last thread was nearing the 10k post limit so here's part 3.

The same rules as the last thread apply here. People seem to have strong opinions either way when it comes to McGregor and threads here tend to get a bit heated from time to time. Please keep it civil and discuss all things Conor in a mature way.

Any name-calling, trolling, baiting, or being a general ass-hat will earn you a ban from the thread and possibly the forum.

Any "Do you even train Bro?" or "I'm an mma fan longer than you" type posts are not permitted either. They only make you look like a fool and as a result, everyone hates you. Yes everyone.

Lads consider this the one and only warning - big fight with a lot of hype around it. It brings new fans to the forum as well as the regulars so try and get along. Any trolling or nonsense and people will find themselves on a break from the forum and that applies to everyone.

It doesn't annoy me, I just think it's daft. You yourself have stated that there's no reason for McGregor to care, so I don't understand people's urge to get upset on his behalf. Some people are just stubborn and stuck in their ways and you'll never be able to convince them otherwise.

Well no, it doesn't annoy me, I just think it's ridiculous (and, by the way, snobby) to assert that the reason a journalist doesn't like McGregor is down to the fact that he's full of self loathing because he's just a journalist whereas McGregor, without a third level education, has more money than God. You really have to stretch to connect those dots. How many of us on here who follow McGregor do you reckon have a third level education and would prefer more fulfilling, better paid jobs? Quite a few I'd wager.

Heard that Coleman piece on Newstalk myself as well.

For a bit of perspective, I've been on both sides of the fence. I loved boxing and thought MMA was too violent. The little of it I had seen at that time was guys on the ground, with usually the guy on top landing unanswered blows on the other.

The change for me was watching Conor's fight against Brandão on TV. I have a few friends who were big into MMA, and were raving on about Conor. So I sat and watched the event, and even through the TV, you could sense the unbelievable atmosphere.

From then, I watched all of Conor's fights and also began to get up to speed with other fighters on his cards, to eventually watching most events now.

I think an awful lot of the negative press towards MMA and Conor is people not watching it for themselves and/or parroting other people who are equally as clueless.

I think another part of it is maybe a bit of jealousy and resentment for not "getting" all the excitement. The best Irish sporting events I've seen have been Conor's fights, including the build up to events. I think from the outside looking in, some may feel they're missing out, but instead of giving the sport a chance, they just regurgitate the same old tired cliches about MMA.

It was still amusing to hear Coleman unable to make a connection between Conor being the most coveted Irish sports star, and the audio clip he played, which shows how Conor is able to self promote himself. He may be a bit dense when it comes to understanding the difference between promotion and actually believing some of the stuff that comes out of Conor's mouth.

I've seen this mentioned a few times and it really isn't true, no matter how much people want it to be.

The reality is that a lot of people just don't like the sport or it's theatrics. A lot of people don't like boxing or rugby either, as they consider it too rough, for what it's worth.

Heard this from a friend who was at an event John Kavanagh was attending and speaking at last night:

John Kavanagh this evening said Conor has been granted a boxing license in Nevada and it will be publicly announced next week. He says that they want a Khabib or Mayweather fight at some time in 2017 after Conors child is born, most likely towards end of the year. Also wants to be on new years card December 31st 2017. This was at one of John's appearance events that he does.

The most laughable thing I've heard from naysayers is that McGregor should take a leaf out of Ali's book and be more respectful to his opponents, obviously haven't seen any clips of him speaking about Frazier. :rolleyes:

Not sure about general white Americans feelings toward him at the time, but some of the stuff he said to Frazier was pretty abhorrent. Classless mostly, and led to it taking Frazier years to forgive him.

As I said maybe they don't like the theatrics i.e. the stuff McGregor does and says.

On the Ali thing yeah I'm not sure how much he was liked at the time. Certainly before his ban and when he was with the Nation of Islam he was pretty divisive.

From what I've read about Ali he (similar to McGregor) divided opinion in America. Even before the Nation of Islam he apparently was never far away from controversy and had a lot of 'haters'.

What he said to Frazier at times was horrible, similar enough to what McGregor says I suppose.

My "blinkered" support for Conor is based primarily on the fact I think he is the best in the world, so I always take his side in fight discussions. I'm never going to say Khabib CAN'T get him down and sambo him to the next dimension. He can and he might. I just think it's more likely that Conor drops him first.

As for Coach Kav, he's a nice person I just don't agree with a lot of his views. He's a right-wing, alt-right type and I'm more of the compassionate "snowflake" type.

For example - he mocked the Womens March saying "why don't these people go march in Saudi Arabia or places that don't have equal rights?". Which is fairly hypocritical considering he personally took money from the Bahrain Royal Family whose record on women is just as atrocious as Saudi Arabia.

Then he posts on Facebook that Chael Sonnen would be a great addition to any gym. Which is fairly hypocritical because John's on record as saying he'd never allow anyone in his gym with a PED record.

So which is it? Is he for protesting against Bahrain and PED's or is he for their money and Chael types are welcome in the gym? :rolleyes:

As for Conor, he briefly alluded to his ACL recovery-partying in the walk-and-talk Ariel did with him before the Brandao fight. He just said he was hanging out with the wrong crowd and going out too much.

I'm not seeing this.

I think he linked the Chael thing as Chael was quite humble in defeat which he, and many others liked, and also Chael respected it was Tito's last fight.That humbleness and respect is what I'm guessing is what he wanted to highlight.

Kavanagh did also say "regardless of history" to highlight his views on PEDs.

As for him being alt right come on now! I'm guessing he's like an awful lot of people who are just in the middle, more than likely left of the middle, looking at the extreme left, the alt right, and populism politics thinking WTF is going on here!

As for what he said about the women's march I think he just wanted to highlight the bizarreness of it. It was a march for women but was also a de facto march for abortion and a de facto march against Trump. Some of the biggest opponents of abortion in Ireland are women and a good chunk of Trump voters were women so what's going on here. Also whether we like it or not Trump was democratically elected in his country.

One thing that really disgusted me about the march and highlighted the hypocrisy of it was last week there was a case in Irish court were a girl had been raped for years by her Father and the Father was being sentenced. The judge who sentenced the Father noted that the girls family had ostracised the girl and so had her community. I don't remember any signs highlighting her plight or any on the extreme left shouting for her rights even though it happened here in Ireland. Much easier to just ****e on about Trump though.

I know I'm talking about some very non MMA issues here but I find labelling someone alt right when they're just not extreme left incredibly annoying.

Would a right wing alt right type encourage people to vote for gay marriage for example? I doubt it but Kavanagh did so how does that work then?

It would be hypocritical if he was marching against Bahrain while taking money from them. Its not hypocritical of him to point out that if the woman's march was interested in the welfare of women they could pick better targets than the USA in 2017.

Back to MMA, i hope Conor faces the winner of Khabib v Ferguson. Id like to see him face one of those guys rather than go looking for a 3rd belt.
