Short break suggestions

KERSPLAT!

I'm hoping to get away for a few days soon enough, either down the country or a city break. Only going for 3 nights or so, anyone any suggestions?

Planning on getting out and about, sightseeing and touristy stuff.

Where have you been recently that you would recommend?

Are you going with someone?

These little cottages in skibbereen are really nice for couples plus there's lots of outdoor stuff to do in west cork too.

Winterlong

Belfast is a great city to visit for a few days. Lots of city centre hotels at reasonable prices.
It is a good walking city and lot of touristy stuff to do.

Skib a great town alright. Prefer it to Kinsale or Clon, it's nearer to West Cork proper, Mizen Head, Sheep's Head, the islands etc. and not just prettified for tourists.

As Belfast was mentioned, East Down is lovely. Newcastle, at the foot of the Mournes. Plenty of walks and drives again.

Another vote for Kerry. Killarney or down around the Dingle Peninsula and Slea Head. It's a gorgeous county.

Went to Budapest last February and loved it. Great for strolling around and admiring the architecture during the day. The food is fantastic and drink is cheap. They have cool ruin bars and the thermal baths are fab. The city is very clean and the locals are friendly and helpful.

I went with a friend and we got a great central hotel near a tram stop for £78 total which included a superior room for 2 nights b&b & a glass of champagne on arrival.

Never been myself but my Dad loved Budapest, (he rated it as his favourite place and he travelled a lot) he was late 60s when he went, also have friend who is only 30 who also raves about it so that's a decent age range recommending it.

My last two weekend breaks were to Lisbon and Prague and I'd highly recommend both. Neither will break the bank, but are two great cities. I did bike tours in both and really enjoyed them. I imagine if you go around the massive national park outside of Lisbon you'd get some great cycling.

And people telling you that Waterford isn't a great break are wrong. It's a beautiful part of the country. The coastal drive from Tramore to Dungarvan is beautiful, loads of beaches to stop in along the way. A couple of great restaurants in Dungarvan and Waterford (and a michelin star one in Ardmore if you win the lotto). Some great hiking in the Comeraghs. A few good tours to do in the city too. But, most of Ireland can be lovely. Cork, Kerry, Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo. All beautiful counties. And I must get up to Donegal some day!

Never been myself, unfortunately. Logistically out the window, for me. But, I've heard from plenty who have. That'll sober the lads up, 'Splat. Then ye can head back to town and get roaring drunk, trying to get the taste out of ye mouth.

I hear Lisbon is excellent, it's on my list of places to go.

I love Berlin, so much to do there, and if you venture outside the city (which is huge) there are some excellent spots like Potsdam.

Barca is always a great spot to go to as well where there is a huge mix of things to be done.

In Ireland, I was down in Cahirsiveen at the end of summer and it's a wonderful spot. Loads of pubs/walking/hiking/climbing/biking options down there.

As they've both been mentioned, did a 2 city break before, Prague and Vienna. Chalk and cheese. Prague doesn't have a huge amount to see once you do the Jewish area, bridge and castle...but great at night. Vienna has loads to see by day, but boring enough at night.

Surreptitious

Killarney or Cork City. Killarney has loads of pubs, shops, restaurants and clubs and the National Park is really beautiful. If you go to Cork you can drive 40 mins to Kinsale which is famous for food and it's scenery plus historical walks and boating. There's no point going to the middle of nowhere if you're with a bunch of lads, you need some kind of social excitement.

Don't think I've seen Kilkenny mentioned so far but you should consider it. Maybe do Kilkenny on a Friday night and Waterford on the Saturday night.

Only about 30 minutes apart you get two cities into the same weekend.

Depending on your location, maybe take the train to Kilkenny on the Friday and then hop on the train to Waterford on the Saturday or vice versa. Both location are well serviced routes/timetables and both stations are very well located. (Also takes away the worry of driving after a few heavy days on the beer and if booked in advance can work out fairly cheap when compared with fuel/parking and toll costs).

Plenty day time activities in both cities in terms of walking tours, sightseeing and restaurants in you want to spend some time out of the pub.
