The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

Been somparing a new Leon cupra 290 vs 3 door Golf R with DSG as my 2 options for my first new car late next year.

Leon with spec i want would be 42500 - 4k scrappage as current deal from seat stands (3.5k or so of extras) Would prefer a 3 door but only 5 door and ST here.

Golf R is coming in at just under 46000 or so with 800 quid in extras (Optional paint+wheels as base spec is pretty comprehensive)

Leon second hand values seem to be quite weak on the 280's though at 26k or so for a 2 year old which is a concern.

Brand new SG? The MK7.5 R will be well out by then. VW haven't given any details on what changes it'll have... but expect a mild facelift (like the GTI is getting) and a slight power hike is likely... ~10bhp. 7 speed dsg possibly too. The standard kit probably won't change much but digital dash might be standard - or at least optional.

Seat residuals are always relatively poor.

All boils down to what deals are out there when 172 rolls around. Been told to know what im doing around week 22/23 in order to get the ball rolling

Well if it's a factory order (if you're fussy on colour / spec) then it's a 10-12 week wait from ordering.

I'd say you could take a hammering on the equity in the Leon in 3 years time due to the poorer resale value.

BTW haven't factory orders closed on the current Golf R now, until the facelift arrives later next year?

All that tells me is VAG heirachy is upping the R a notch or two with a revised drivetrain as there is no way they would let a Seat have the same platform.

Next 6 months will tell alot either way as to whats out there and what retailers are doing deals. Focus ST facelift with ford real deal event looked ok but i just hate the interiors.

Ya but conversely there's no way the new R will out power Audi's S3 either. So like the S3, it'll most likely get a 10bhp bump and the 7spd Dsg.

Agreed on the Ford interiors. The Leon interior isn't too hot either though tbh, not even up to Octavia standards.

I cannot see the Golf R getting a huge boost in power otherwise it starts encroaching on the Audi RS3.

If they don't have something special up theirs sleeves for the R, why did they not show it along with the rest of the face lifted range a few weeks back?
I'm not expecting any thing great either other than the same upgrade the Audi s3 got but maybe there is something afoot now that the focus rs is seriously more powerful?

I wouldn't read anything into it.
1. The R has always been launched long after the lesser derivatives.
2. They didn't announce details for the GTD changes either.

Never copped gtd wasn't mentioned either.
Maybe the 190 vag diesel in here?
I still think the 240diesel biturbo with 4wd in a golf dR would be some great day to day car.

I agree, just ordered a Passat with that engine. Amazing diesel engine because despite the Passat being 1.7 tons it can still catapult it to 62mph in 6.1 secs and top end of 150mph

Yeah 7spd DSG and 10bhp afaik. Same as S3.
I think they've managed to make it a little more agressive looking. A subtle thing, but they've ditched the current body coloured skirts for GTI style (gloss black) ones. That with the bumper changes give it a more beefed-up-GTI look rather than the current "bluemotion with body kit" look imo.

Thing that bugs me about wheels like that is that they are directional. So two look like they are fitted backwards. Subtle but nice refresh all the same.

The LCD gauges are really cool I think. They really change the car from the drivers perspective.

Quick survey of anyone that's owned the Mark VII GTI. I have one and love it to bits. And here's the but, the configuration of the pedals in the manual leave me very uncomfortable and I can't adjust it.

Basically it leaves me feeling as if I'm 'hovering' over the accelerator with my right foot, in order to leave enough room to clutch properly with my left foot. I've tried adjusting everything but to no avail.

Everything else about the car is perfect but this one thing is actually causing me a lot of pain. Has anyone here experienced anything similar?

No, can't say I ever noticed that. It doesn't make sense either? The accelerator and the clutch are well spaced apart and the brake is between them. How is your right foot fouling your left in this case? Very very large shoes?!!

I'd have said that the pedal layout / positioning is very good in the Golf. Have you ever driven an Audi A4 or manual 3 series for comparison?! You need to be a contortionist to use the pedals in those cars!

Ah what I mean is that the clutch travels far back into the foot well. The accelerator doesn't travel as far and therefore my right foot is hovering over the accelerator and my clutch foot is stretched out... if that makes more sense?

I always feel as if I can't stretch out my right leg comfortably. If I move the seat far back enough, it's way too far for the clutch to engage properly.

Kinda... but tbh no, I can't say I noticed (when I had a manual - I'm in a DSG now). Clutch travel generally is much further than the accelerator in most cars though I'd have thought. Maybe try using the footrests either side of the pedals?

DSG is awesome. I had one in my Scirocco but I got offered too good a deal with the GTI in Manual to pass it up. I had a manual Mk V GTI and never had any issue with it so assumed the Mk VII would be the same.
