Just going through things there now. We scanned 1.92 last yr. Barren rate of 3.9%. Before lambing we sold 50 singles and replaced them with good horneys in lamb with twins. We also sold 25 ewes with singles that i didnt like who had lost a lamb, prolapse or footrot history etc. Including pet lambs sold on done deal we had 1580 lambs to sell/replacements.
That works out 1.88 per ewe put to ram. Ave weaning weight was 31kg which gives each ewe producing 57.5 kg of lamb at weaning which im happy about considering the bad start they got.

They're not pure, probably half and three quarter bred, he has everywhere reseeded so it'd be topclass grass,
He had 140 pets last year after scanning 2.4.

It might not be too bad when you get into that kind of numbers. There'd be potential to invest in a system to artificially rear them and just not bother with too much fostering.

There'd be no singles available to foster at those percentages, he has a machine to rear the pets.
Don't think he's scanned the ewe lambs yet...he'd have more lambs in his ewe lambs than I'd have in my adult ewes

Impressive work!! How many ewes does he have. A little too good being honest. On the positive side all the ewes have two lambs and you've pets to sell. At €80 that's €11,200 not to be sniffed at

We bought a machine to rear pets a few years ago. Excellent purchase. Just put the triplets in at a day old and u can build up them until they're ready to foster. We rear the twins from the ewe lambs on it. We paid €1500 same machine is over€2000 now.

Rears great lambs too but it costs, lambs seem to take to it very easy

Again very impressive numbers. When you've only small numbers like that every lamb matters and he's doing a good job by the looks of it . With that number of ewes it's easier to handle triplets and quads

Yeah they pick it up very easy. They've a constant supply of warm milk. It's costly to rear them to weaning. We estimate each lamb drinks almost a bag of milk powder to weaning plus creep on top of that!! So it's not for everyone

I doubt it, they'd be well fed, silage all 75DMD as well,
Have never been there for the lambing, he'd have a good crew for the month of march

Thats some serious goin from that man, we visited that place a few years ago, hes set up for that system and i would say it is as profitable as you can get in sheep farming but a alot of work! Definitly making the most of every acre, wouldnt like to be doin it with a thousand ewes though

scanned 130 on Saturday morning in 25 minutes...

now that is a good mornings work...!

lad that scans for us scanned 900 ewes on Friday in 3 hours.. all shorn belclare cross.

How aacurate is he at that going?

Oh well f*ck it anyways. Scanned today, 32 ewes, 11singles, 11 doubles, 1 triplet and f*cking 9 empty. Scanner said some had lambs and lost them. All separated now. Can you get blood tests or anything done to see why they aborted? Himself is like a bull. Don't know what happened. We bought in 12 hoggets for breeding and most of them were grand the most of the emptys all had lambs last year. Will have to check back in the diary and see if they had hard lambing last year or anything. He also said he didn't get to flush them properly before the ram went with them so their condition might not have been great. Going to the shop now for a takeaway and beer for him.

Get them blood tested for toxo. Sounds like it. Did you have a ewe that aborted a few weeks ago or was that someone else on here?

Scanner cancelled for me tomorrow after getting herself off work to mind children and moving some sheep home. Ripping

Yep that was us last week. So that's 10 out of 33. We've 10 more ewes this year than last year and less lambs due :-( Horrible numbers. Not a happy house this evening. Friday the 13th indeed.

Ah sh*te Razor that's crap about the scanner :-(

Sounds very like toxo, or maybe run with dogs before the embryo properly implanted. A blood test will show toxo if they've had it, might need a swab as well, talk to your vet, I've heard it can be diagnosed from saliva as well.

A neighbour had early toxo that aborted 80 ewes and he put the rams back with them early january for a fortnight, 55 lambed after
