Christmas Millionaire Raffle 2016

I just bought three tickets to give as gifts, easy enough present and a bit of fun.

But I did just notice that last year they had only 350,000 tickets for sale, this year there is 500,000! Quite the increase in tickets, but not a great increase in prizes. In fact the prize list is identical to last year, except they will be pulling in an extra 3 million euros via the added 150000 tickets.
How can they do this without increasing prizes? I suppose many are like me and didn't really look at it too deep before buying.

Prizes
There are 3,176 prizes in total and seven prize levels ranging from €500 up to €1,000,000;

Level 1: €1,000,000 - 1 prize
Level 2: €250,000 - 1 prize
Level 3: €100,000 - 4 prizes
Level 4: €10,000 - 10 prizes
Level 5: €5,000 - 25 prizes
Level 6: €1,000 - 115 prizes
Level 7: €500 - 3,020 prizes
The total value of all prizes available to win in the Game is €3.5 million, which means that the likely proportion of the proceeds of the Game which are expected to be paid in prizes is 50%.

That's a bit cheeky of them to reduce folks chances of winning by 30.00000000000007% approx, if this is correct about ticket sales. Their only offset is a couple of index points of inflation or costings indexes which again would be in the very small percentiles.

Thus there is probably a 30.00000000000007% increase in the chances of me not buying a ticket

They should also just merge all the prizes to say a few hundred (x350) fixed at €10k, to pay for a good night out.

lol, I am no way near as talented as your good self re: precise calculations, but the numbers are correct.
350,000 tickets last year, 500,000 this year with no additional prizes on tap.

It would be nice if they just made it real fun , this kind of slight of hand puts a damper on things. I can't take back my tickets now (and why would I since I have the winners of course, lol) but I prob would not have purchased them had I noticed this beforehand.

To be fair, it may not reduce the chance of winning by as much as that as they might not sell out all the tickets. But the prize fund (in €) remains constant even if they don't. The structure of the Raffle game is somewhat different to their other games.

This is why they say 'likely proportion' here:

"which means that the likely proportion of the proceeds of the Game which are expected to be paid in prizes is 50%."

There is usually high demand for this special lotto, even with a 1 in 157.43073047858942 chance of winning anything, which is surprising.

Still to shift 1/2m tickets at €20 a pop would require 1 in every 6.89 persons (excludes under 18s) making a single purchase.

Rather low win odds there right enough. I suppose the attraction is the high prize amounts.

Not sure sales are going too well for this. Bought a few on Friday night as presents (and one for myself) and the numbers were in the 260k range.

I'm making two assumptions here of course, that

A. The numbers are sequential based on time of sale
B. Peak sales are in the lead up to Xmas for presents

I think it does indeed go in order, but I suspect there will be a last minute dash for tickets before the draw. Pity as I'd prefer them punished for pulling a fast one with the 150,000 tix sneakily added on

Given that you've already bought, it seems to me that a low sales figure would actually increase your chance of winning, as the prizes are fixed.

Yes, of course on a personal/individual angle I'd prefer it for that reason too, but I am speaking to the extra 3 million they are poised to haul in should the tix sell out, all while not adding on a single extra prize over last year's.

I purchased one of these locally for my girlfriend on Christmas eve as she gave me one for christmas and the ticket number was in the 352,000 range, exceeding what I thought at the time was the maximum amount of tickets available.

I very much doubt it. I think the number sold is the total number in the draw.

Fwiw, I bought one on Thursday - the day before yesterday - and my number is around 400,000, so I suspect they'll sell most if not all the 500,000.

Someone just gave me a ticket for this 10mins ago, it was bought back on 7th Dec around the 30k mark,
lets hope they sold the lot, just so that the people and not the komputer doesn't issue itself any unsold as winners.

Just checked, the draw takes place at 10pm, they would appear to still be selling tickets on their site.

Not certain of actual availability as have to be registered & logged to their site, but the €20 play now button is still visible.

Don't think it's broadcast, as there would be too many winning codes to call out (3,176).
It's due for 10pm but the website states the results will only be published on 1st Jan?

Plenty of the older generation won't have the interwebs, ideally they should publish the list in some of the main papers for tomorrow.
Then again, they're most likely already compiled and sitting up at the printers yard.

In the rules/terms it also mentions:

The Unique Multiple Digit Number is issued in consecutive numerical sequence by the Central Computer System.

Website hit and miss this morning - I bought mine online and I can't get on to check it, it keeps knocking me out!!! You'd think they'd have it in order when they know so many would be trying to check their purchase.
