Thought I'd update the OP with links and stuff for anyone who stumbles across this.

The former Off the Ball hosts have partnered with The Irish Times to do a series of weekly podcasts. They go online each Tuesday and cover a variety of sports, with a number of contributors including Sid Lowe, Richie Sadlier, Gerry Thornley and Shane Horgan.

Ken comparing Mike Dean to a 1920's silent movie slapstick comedy actor was the highlight of the Football show.

Murph and Ken are a good combo, sometimes when the three of them are on the Football show it can be a bit overcrowded, it works better with two voices, a straight man for Ken to bounce his mad theories off.

I just see the book as a way to support the podcast. I think i flipped through it the day it arrived, read one comic strip and haven't opened it back up since. Something that would be more interesting to read in a years time anyway.

Got both Vol 1 & Vol 2 Annuals this year with that 20euro deal. Perhaps vol 1 was a little out of context this year but wasn't impressed with either book tbh. I get that they are going for a jokey jokey self-depreciating style but both books just seemed quite bland. Not like the podcast at all. Or perhaps that particular style just works better through the podcast medium.

The plugging of the book is fair enough, but I just wish they'd say "The book is out, it cost's €x, free delivery to Ireland and UK" instead of all the jokey, we're above plugging our wares sh*te. I can't imagine anyone begrudging them trying to sell a book.

I can't say I've noticed a drop in form recently, but I've always enjoyed their long form pieces and having on authors with different perspectives.
If all I wanted was the scores I'd look at teletext(is that still a thing?). I understand they have to strike a balance to keep as many people as possible happy though.

The all sports show tends to go to a bit stale for me this time a year, when the only non soccer games are rugby, but I'm sure plenty of people say that during the summer when it's %90 gaelic football and hurling.

On reflection that's absolutely fair, I think my view has just been coloured by over-familiarity and the relentless plugging of the book recently!

Seriously, if you're giving out about forced to have a laugh, having the craic etc. Second Captains is as bad an any. They've only 4 hours a week to cram everything in. They do it well most of the time!

I'd echo the sentiments on OTB. They've improved a lot since taking over, and once Parkinson was jettisoned, the show because infinitely more listenable for me.

I still prefer SC, and haven't really noticed that much of a dip in quality tbh (maybe a little bit of a dip in that they seem to be moving more and more towards an American style with the sound effects and stuff which I don't like) but OTB is decent now in fairness.

I love the book review podcast every year. It's one of their best shows. I'd have liked if maybe they did a few more books rather than the 5, but Ken doing the Guardiola book was priceless.

I'd have to agree that the standard on OTB has definitely increased, particularly the football segments, however I still wouldn't have it on-par with SC. If they kept Joe as full time presenter, instead of rotating with Gilroy, I think it would vastly improve the show.
