In 50 years who will be the main players on the world stage?

With Brexit and Trump having the potential to change the face of the world, how do you envisage the world stage in fifty years? Do you see the rise of nations like China and India or will the UK and US still retain their places in the world's top economies?

Even if they are still a technical minority in 50 years time, with our democracies so fragmented, it would only need a voting block of around 30-40% to form a government. And that is being generous, as a lot of countries are moving towards a bonus system for the leading party

With first past the post you only need a majority in just over half the constituencies. If people vote for a third party then you don't even need 25% of the voters. Given an election turnout of 50% then you'd only need about 13% of the electorate , so maybe only be 10% of the population.

The EU will have fragmented further and become largely irrelevant as an institution. European countries will continue to fall in power and prosperity relative to the rest of the world.

Russia will similarly fall in power due to its self imposed isolation. Possibly splitting apart along historic ethnic lines.

China will become more belligerent, stay totalitarian. India will be richer but not powerful.

The US I think will actually increase in power relative to the world and if Trump has his way will have a deep isolationist tint.

I could see Brazil being a big player if they exploit the full agricultural potential of the Amazon basin but that would take more than 50 years and would cause major environmental damage.

EU will get stronger. With the exception of the UK all you need to do is point at what's happening in Turkey , Russia and the central Asian states to convince everyone they are better off inside. And Russia already had that split.

China will continue to play the long game , it's better for business to gradually sneak up.

Much of the Amazon has been deforested already for cattle farms which has led to drying up of the western side, because most of the rain in the Amazon is recycled from the transpiration of trees. So to recap, the land isn't good enough for crops and water is going to be a huge problem.

East Africa is English speaking and closer time one than India, expect call centres there.

Western Joblessness means it's a employers market. Things like defined benefit pensions, jobs for life, and investment in employees are rare.

Oddly enough technology will help in many areas. Desalination is an option for half the worlds population that lie within 60Km of the sea. Yes it takes energy but renewables are suitable because water is easily stored. Climate change and population growth are big issues.

Given what they are doing with agriculture....they have the potential to destroy the eu on the world market in next 10-15 years if they keep up
(It's massively under developed....only getting going now because of eu sanctions)

Going against the grain here but I think the EU is going to come asunder and Brexit is only the start of it. The speed at which it happens depends on what concessions the Brits get during their negotiations over the next couple of years. If they lose most of the disadvantages and retain most of the advantages, why wouldn't the rest, one by one say **** this, we're leaving too!

And I hope it does happen and we get something closer to what the old EEC was.

The problem with Russian agriculture is the lack of navigatable and large distances and short growing seasons makes transportation much more costly than the US China or India.

India and Saudi are already growing food in Africa as it's cheaper than irrigation at home.

If you remember when the wall came down there was a scramble to join NATO. How many countries have left ?
Joining the EU takes longer.

We used to be in the UK's traditional sphere of influence. I can't see us wanting to go back to being dependent on their whims.

No one can predict the future. Who can say what would happen if some far right radical nationalist party was formed and came to power in the UK in 20 years time for example?
