Looks like I gonna get thru life without learning to make a proper tie

How many Boardsies can make a proper necktie with a proper smooth knot finish????

I can do a simple tie up but end up with a crease under the knot. I getting bye personally but was asked recently to make the tie for a Groom on the morning of his wedding and I had to admit that my effort would be noticed in photos etc as a botch job - so I had to admit that I didn't know how to make a proper knot for a tie!!!

To be honest.... I feel bad in myself for this lack of knowledge of a most basic 'man- thing'!! By the I first came to need a tie - I had left home and had no one to teach me!!! And now am too old and embarrassed to ask someone to show me now!!!

Shorten one side, cross the other over till it folds around once, loop the long end through the back and up over the front and slide through the front of the knot section. Tighten as needed using the front strap while holding the knot with the other hand.

I've probably known since I was in primary or secondary school. I haven't had to tie one in years though.

I can tie a tie but the knot is never visually appealing. For my wedding I had started googling videos to show me how to tie a double Windsor but in the end the suit hire shop had tied and loosened them all for us. My standard knot will do for all other occasions

Learned how to a do a Windsor knot while living in London years ago - I honestly can't tie one any other way.

I hate those elastic ties that some schools have. Ffs, its a skill to learn.

I can do a decent one, but it sometimes takes a few attempts to get the length just right.

I can tie a tie properly and make the knot neat and visually appealing for four of the more common knot variations. It's all about the dimple!

The vast majority of men I see are incapable of tying a knot properly or worse, they leave the top button of their shirt undone and reef the knot up. The awful looking collar spread always gives it away though.

I don't consider it shameful but there's nothing wrong with a bit of attention to detail. Particularly if the event that requires a tie in the first place is something that's important to the people involved, such as weddings, funerals, interviews etc.

Now I never knew that.... I actually end up with a cool 'dimple' then!! My main problem is the knot slipping meaning my tie is then crooked and off centre - which I only spot after visiting the bathroom!!

You need a symmetrical knot. Depending on shirt collar style and tie width and quality go Windsor or half Windsor.

One of my friends is 34 and still can't tie a tie. He went off for a brace of interviews in London after graduating and his father prepared a few pre-knotted ties for him to pack in his suitcase for them.
