The last thread was nearing the 10k post limit so here's part 3.

The same rules as the last thread apply here. People seem to have strong opinions either way when it comes to McGregor and threads here tend to get a bit heated from time to time. Please keep it civil and discuss all things Conor in a mature way.

Any name-calling, trolling, baiting, or being a general ass-hat will earn you a ban from the thread and possibly the forum.

Conor's been nominated for RTE's sports person of the year. He's up against some serious competition (although I voted for him, I suspect Annalise Murphy may have it in the bag after the massive reaction to her homecoming earlier this year) but a victory would do a lot to legitimise him in "polite society" and piss off the "MMA isn't a sport" gobsh!tes.

I already voted for Conor, I am a massive football fan and I follow other sports but I just think as a whole Conor has been the best sports person from Ireland this year.

Had to look up who she was.

He would probably win an American sportsperson of the year (if he was Amercan obv) but no doubt won't win our one. It's not even close between him and anyone else on that list for what they've achieved this year.

It cold legitimise it, or more likely it could bring more media attention in Ireland which = more complaining about it.

Anybody hear Dunphy's outburst on it? He said Robbie Brady should be in ahead of him. Now I've followed soccer longer than MMA and love our national side, but suggesting a guy playing in the English Championship over a guy who was deemed the best in two weight divisions at once! Some people don't see straight when it comes to MMA.

But brady scored in the euros. Lol.

Dunphy is good for a laugh but anything he says can usually be discarded in any serious conversation. I would guess he hasnt the first notion about anything to do with mma.

It's very rare in an Olympic year for a non-Olympian to win the award. Certainly in the British Version, which is still far more prestigious.

Damon Hill (1996), Nigel Mansell (1992) and Steve Davis (1988) being the only 3 to win in Olympic Years since 1960.

Hill and Mansell winning the World Championship in Formula 1, when it was on terrestrial tv, and Davis won the Triple Crown in snooker that year.

For the RTE version, only Ronan O' Gara (2004) and Padraig Harrington (2008) snapped that trend since 1992, both having monster years.

In some ways, I wouldn't take it too personally if it was given to an Olympic athlete. History shows the public tend to go with Olympians - probably because it's the largest sporting stage in the world and we don't tend to have much success on it.

However, there's not one doubt in my mind that Conor McGregor has had the type of year enjoyed by Steve Davis, Damon Hill, ROG and Paddy Harrington.

He should win.
He deserves to win.

The list is full of inspirational people, no doubt, but if you're looking for BOTH an inspirational and an aspirational athlete from the list, it really has to be between McGregor and Frampton.

The O' Donovan Brothers and Annalise Murphy might inspire people, for sure, but let's be very realistic here - Annalise has been funded to the tune of €193,750 (total) by the Irish Sports Council since 2006. That's a fair chunk going into a niche, some might call 'exclusive', sport.

Conor and Carl came from relatively humble working class backgrounds to the top of their sports, with little-to-no funding, and that's an aspirational story that a lot of people could take motivation from.

And while Carl has had a brilliant time of things, I feel Conor edges him out. He has literally written his name into the history books in so many ways in 2016 - even breaking long-standing records held outside of his own sport (MSG Attendance and Gate).

If he does win, we will see at least 10 columns written in the Papers on the reasons he SHOULDN'T have won, why it's terrible and at least a dozen references to the word "Barbaric", which should provide at least a days worth of waffle in here

to be fair he completely deserves it...first two weight champ in the sports history, highest earner in the sports history, biggest gate in the history of madison square garden, and thats only scratching the surface.

yeah and that's a fantastic achievement but so are many of what the other contenders achieved.

Dundalk's achievements in the football have been amazing, has an Irish team ever done so well before?, and Horgan would be picking up the award for his team as much as himself.

I have zero problem if he wins as I think he's done excellently but equally if one of the other contenders wins I'd have zero problem with that either. Well bar Heaslip as I don't think Ireland's results, which is what he's getting the award for really, are as good as what some of what the others achieved.

On the back of the Joe Duffy thread being revived, how would people see a rematch going down?

Logic says McGregor knocks him out, but Duffy seems to have a serious chin and if it went to the ground I think he'd have the advantage.

One things for sure it would definitely split the fans! Country and humble versus Dublin and brash!

Just readin the Duffy thread meself and it sounded like he was the great white hope but disappeared, what's the story with his next fight?

Similar to the second Diaz fight. With McGregor reluctant to go to ground, but McGregor having the advantage on the feet.

didnt joe duffy only get his purple belt recently? I know he subbed him before but that fight counts for zero at this stage given how far theyve both come since then, Id give conor the advantage on the ground if they were to fight now. I agree though it wouldn't go to the ground most probably, and I don't see duffy surviving the shots diaz did
