Hr didn't pay one or more tolls, ignored the first warning letter. Then ignored the second warning letter, and the third, and do on.
He could have engaged with EFlow but chose not to. He ignored the solicitors letters.
He now has had to pay the price for being immature.
Moral of the story: if you can't pay for something then don't use it!

Eflow fees are a bit on the steep side if you let it go too far, but he took the piss. How much of it is their legal fees/recovery costs?

Reading the story it say he did pay his bills and has receipts for doing so but that he started getting notices of journeys he didn't make and ignored them. It's not beyond the realms of possibilities that his plate was cloned but he shouldn't have ignored those letters.

I'd iamaginbe if you were using it weekly/daily over a long period and not paying the bills and penalties would rack up quickly.
Say €100 per unpaid trip, each way once a week for a year and it could be €10k in no time.

Initial default - penalty charge of €3.00
After 14 days - additional penalty charge of €41.00
After further 56 days - additional penalty charge of €102.50
Total fines per passage - €146.50

About 70 or 80 would do it when court costs are added in.

I think each journey ramps up to about €150 if all notices are ignored.

That would be about 100 journeys.

Very easy to rack up that many over a few months.

Add in legal charges for district court and the continued increasing penalties and sheriff costs and you are at 16k quite quickly.

Considering the number of letters, warnings and eventual serving of court summons, it shows abject stupidity for someone to allow it go so far.

I don't believe an iota of his story. If he was anyway genuine he'd have been able to resolve it long ago.

In any case, why didn't he get a tag and save costs.

My guess is he was one of the types who drove close behind a truck and thought he'd get away with it - not realising they have rear view cameras for those drivers.

What I don't understand is from the story it seems ownership of the car recently changed yet he got the bill for €16k which would have taken a huge amount of tolls and time to accumalate considering it takes 56 days for the fee to reach €103. He would have needed over 150 unpaid tolls going over 56 days to get where he is now. Whoy has he not looked for photos of each toll so he could determine it was not his car, the whole story is full of holes, sounds like a 101% chancer.

Well, it is. I know of someone against whom a judgement was secured for accumulated parking fines and penalties for €90,000. So much for deciding the law doesnt apply to you.

In which case the photos of the car would clear it up, simple things like a garage sticker on the car or dealers details on the number plate or position of the tax/nct/insurance disc would clear him. He was on with Duffy earlier and his story had more holes than a lady of the night on Leeson Street.

I've always found eflow decent enough on the few occasions I forgot to pay. IIRC they waived the late charges because I got on to them as soon as they flagged it to me.

If it's a genuine fcuk up, hope it gets sorted but otherwise hopefully a bit of a reality check for the Want Everything, Pay Nothing crew

Legal proceedings kick in once your single journey penalty reaches €140. Not sure if the figure keeps rising. 57 return journeys would then equal 16000 ish

Out of interest is there no legislation to stop this kind of thing. It's totally out of kilter in relation to the lost revenue.

If it was a genuine fcuked up then I suspect that eflow would have assisted him (as they do) when he called them.
The only plausible scenario is that he ignored all of the many warning letters received.
