According to a study, Ireland has the lowest breastfeeding rates in the developed world and this is very closely linked to its Catholic heritage. Despite breastfeeding being widely acknowledged as best for babies, less than half of Irish women have tried it. In the 1970s, breastfeeding reached a low of 11%.

So it looks like despite all the changes here in the past 25 years, Irish Catholic guilt is still alive and well.
