Official Conor McGregor thread (part 3) *Updated Warning in 1st Post Re:Boxing match

The last thread was nearing the 10k post limit so here's part 3.

The same rules as the last thread apply here. People seem to have strong opinions either way when it comes to McGregor and threads here tend to get a bit heated from time to time. Please keep it civil and discuss all things Conor in a mature way.

Any name-calling, trolling, baiting, or being a general ass-hat will earn you a ban from the thread and possibly the forum.

Most numbered events have title fights, but it's not a rule that it needs it to be PPV. Whether they made it an interim title or not, the card is the same. So I wonder does it actually affect the buys?

Champs have been injured before for 6 month periods and never needed an interim belt; its becoming a new thing now because title fights must increase ppv buys. More people will tune in to see pettis/max for an interim belt than without one would be the thinking id imagine; same thing when jones fought osp for an interim belt. It seems to be the way things are going lately anyway that a belt needs to be on the line regardless.

He fought Frankie for that belt at UFC200, 7 months after he got knocked out

The FW division will be back to nobody giving a fck about it and doing Fight Nogjt main events now for the belt instead of PPV events once UFC 206 is out of the way.

It doesn't matter how exciting the top guys in the division are, but without McGregor it's nothing.

Jones v OSP was originally jones v DC for the belt.
Same when Hunt replace Cain, or GSP pulled out verses Diaz.
In all those spots the interim was due to the champ pulling out injured. Its happened a lot over the years, and makes logical sense.

In this case, we have a title now that wasn't a title fight last week. The champ was never involved. Even if some were handed out in shakey spits in the past, this is a new level.

I'm get that they think that the belt will sell more PPVs. Maybe it will. But theres no way to really know. 145 is certainly more popular now than it ever was in the past

Fw division title fights were never on fight nightcards. I guess you jumped on the UFC train in 2014 though so I assume you never knew that. Must be a shock to find out the sport existed just fine before you arrived to start watching.

He did. He fought Frankie for it at 200. That's the whole point of an interim title...

I presume this has been discussed with Conor and he's happy enough. Whether he's been given a lump sum to keep him happy or promised a title shot instantly if he ever wants to move down again I'd be surprised if this was done without his ok.

If not he could just tell them to take the LW title as well and shove it all up their arse. Then the new owners are in deep ****e. Especially when it's all just to create a nothing interim fight that won't make the company much extra money anyway.

Even Aldo must feel like a knob being handed an "upgraded belt". Although he was so bitter he's probably glad he can have a hollow victory here and pretend he's still the best 145 in the world.

I think he cares more about his financial security than doing Aldo a favour in fairness doesnt owe anybody a thing in mma, fans fighters or the ufc.

See you have you McGregor hatred googles on so you don't see things objectively.

Conor had bigger fish to fry. Going after a higher weight title and bigger money fights is much more important than giving a rematch to a guy that got ended in 13 seconds.

Not to mention the fact Aldo has only been entitled to that rematch since July. Four months ago. Conor has had three fights since Aldo, Jose has had one.

If the UFC wanted that fight from a business perspective, it would have happened. Pretty much nobody wants to see him fight Aldo again after all the build up and pull out and then somewhat anti climax of the actual fight.

I would have liked to see Conor defend the featherweight belt once but I do understand that he doesn't want to make that cut anymore but that means he isn't the greatest 145 out there anymore because he is no longer a 145er.

It was inevitable. Conor was never getting back down to 145, why would he want to? It kills him.

The history books will show he cleaned out that division and won the lightweight title - while still holding the FW belt.

From Conor's perspective, there's nothing more to achieve at that weight - except the risk of tarnishing his legacy. 155 is where he will stay - unless he drops down again for a one off superfight down the line.

After beating Holloway, Mendes and Aldo in the way he did it is hard to make a case for any 145 guy having much for him though.

Personally I don't think Conor was ever going to fight at 145lbs again but say he does, I highly doubt a fight at 145lbs is/was his next play regardless so I can understand the UFC stripping him (even though the way it has come about is ridiculous), but doing it while there's a distinct possibility that your only real back up in terms of PPV buys is gone in just over a month's time seems like a crazy move in the extreme.

Aldo v Holloway/Pettis doing 250,000 PPV's is hardly going to get your $4.2bn investment back.

The only real candidate that he didn't beat was Edgar. Saying he 'cleaned it out' might glamorise it a little but he went through it quickly and pretty much swept aside everyone. Apart from eating a few elbows from Mendes, was he ever in danger throughout the 145 run?

Regardless of all these various stories coming out this thing isn't official until McGregor has his say. He wasn't too happy about Cage Warriors taking their belts back when he signed for the UFC so I can't see him giving this one up easily either. I expect yet more drama in this story.
