Little CuChulainn wrote: » Seems like it'd be a very awkward person that can't pack stuff as it is scanned at the til. I put my stuff on the conveyer, open up the bags in the trolley and put stuff in as it is scanned. I've never found that particular part to be the hold up. The hold ups happen when people are still unpacking their stuff on the conveyor and the staff member can't do any scanning because they have no space to put the items afterwards.
Red Kev wrote: » Yeah, I like to race the till people as well. There's a few simple tricks tobeating Tillman or his female sidekick Tillwoman. First of all get the smaller trolley with the higher loading level as it saves time bending down. Place open bags and/or cardboard box into this. If it's Lidl I always put the bread around 2/3rds of the way down the conveyor belt, so they need a few seconds to look at the contents which gives me a few seconds to keep packing. Veg at the end as it never scans first time. So by the time they turn around to put the last piece of veg on the counter I'm standing there with my hand open looking for it, the debit card in the other. Ensures a defeated Tillman/Tillwoman and a slightly smug but very confident walk across the paving bricks to the car. Makes my week.

Oddly waiting at the next empty til was an ould time two, doddery times two, on old lady B. And while the first one was dodderily ringing another customers goods through B hollered at her is there no one gonna serve at this till. Us been Irish and in queue with a protest could only bury our heads as she repeated this call. B was holding a cornflakes box with a very full shopping basket on the ground. A could see that B was holding a corn flakes box and suggested that if that was all B had she would let her go. B said yes that was all she had despite the fact it clearly wasn't. I despite observing she had more than me said yeah fine she's in a bigger hurry than me. In she shuffled with out so much as nod to todays sap. She says to Lady A I'm in a rush because I only popped into the hardware shop next door, yet her basket must have taken a full half hour to pick out. I was happy to let an old lady out on her feet go ahead. These two old ladies then preceded to show up Homer as a writer of short stories nattering on.The woman paid a bill of about 40 euro with two 50s. And its there confusion started. When she got her change back it turned out she wanted 2 20s and a 10. Then she wanted to add on a pack of 20 Carrolls. Then she wanted 10 euro 087. Meteor, Vodafone or what? No. 087. I was asked my opinion at this stage. I offered a polite one. Then the change came back. Hullaballoo. It was not correct. They got it sorted. Then old lady B said eggs. I forgot me eggs. Off went doddery lady A to fetch them for her. Honestly I am patient and senior citizens deserve patience but this basket took about 10-15 minutes. And the rude ungrateful way she assumed her way in the queue...well I never and all that. By the end I was scouring the ceiling for cameras and waiting for that annoying prick with the folded up newspaper who whistles to come out and prank me, and possibly for that reason alone did I control my tantrum. I've never seen ought like it. So fair play to the Germans and their window sills.

I'm just struggling with how heated people are getting over being delayed for 1, 5 or 10 minutes in their day; it seems to be a new phenomenon. This impatience people are openly admitting to having and this picture being painted of them being under so much time pressure, tripping over themselves to get out of the shop, get out of the next customer's way, and on to their next chore, it wasn't always like this. Things just seemed a bit calmer. And better for it. Most aldilidls I've been in only ever have a third of the checkouts open simultaneously anyway, the rest seem to be for show or for the week before Christmas.

People who claim that they don't delay others at the till while they are packing their many shopping bags are either ignorant of the others they are delaying or they are only buying for 1-2 people, not enough to fit in even one large shopping bag! By the time you get a weeks shopping into bags there is a Q behind you and the only way to avoid that is to be a good German and use the packing shelf provided or find that the next day you put all your shopping on the belt the staff immediately close that till:D:pac:
