As much as we've complained about Ryanair in the past, at least they'd have a replacement aircraft within a few hours....

Ryanair have a fleet of over 300 737-800s, so it's relatively easy to get in a replacement aircraft. EI have a fleet of 51 aircraft of which only 14 are capable of T/A. There is no slack in their schedule so when one of their A330s is out of service for over a week it's going to cause huge issues.

It's a crazy situation. Lucky they had an A330 they could take off Malaga route or both 757's would have been taken out of Shannon.

The A330 that services Malaga is scheduled for a Transatlantic flight at 4pm, as it always is, so theres no spare capacity even if you cancel a malaga flight.

But Aer Lingus is a subsidiary of International Airlines Group who have a fleet of 529 aircraft.

Where are the so called benefits for been part of a group that has economies of large scale?

That is one of the things that have confused me.

The out of service EI-DUO returned to operation today, but EI-FNG went out of service yesterday. Aer Lingus did hire in an aircraft, and both Shannon services ran today. What I don't understand is between Iberia, BA and Aer Lingus, they couldn't get an aircraft together to fly the rotue, but instead hired in one at an expense, and cancelled routes all week at an expense.

Aer Lingus probably isn't as important as BA and Iberia. IAG just see Heathrow slots.

Jet diverts to Shannon with sick passenger (Clare Herald)

Air France flight AF-344 was travelling from Paris to Montreal in Canada when the crew declared a medical emergency.

The Boeing 777-330 jet just crossed the Irish east coast when the crew advised controllers of their emergency and requested permission to divert to Shannon.

Earlier, a flight carrying US military personnel unexpectedly returned to Shannon Airport this afternoon after turning around over the Italian Alps.

The Omni Air International flight had left Shannon shortly before 9.00am having arrived earlier from the US.

Planning (1614) approved for construction of a ground floor extension (118m2) to the existing fire station whereby the new space is to be used as a gym.

Planning (16788) applied for the development within a Strategic Development Zone of a Fire Training Ground at the Secondary Surveillance Radar Equipment site on the north side of Runway 06-24, Shannon Airport, Co Clare.

The development will comprise of the installation of a Simulated Steel Aircraft Shell, a Fire Screen and Engine Rig for the purpose of training fire fighting personnel.

Also included in the development will be an overground Water Storage Tank, 2 No. 2 Tonne LPG Gas Tanks, a 300 Gallon Jet A1 Fuel Tank, 3 No. sheds to house controls and fuel pressurisation unit, security fencing to surround site perimeter, concrete hardstanding areas, site lighting and all other associated site works.

Here is some interesting news, sources tell me EI had considered doing some LHR alterations the current 08.50 service would depart at 07.30.....it didn't happen but I would say watch the space.

Probably not going to even be considered before April again!

Before the Paris flight was pulled (when Ryanair were fighting with Shannon Airport) the load factor was higher than the entire airline average.

Numbers yes but revenue no. Same with Paris and suspect the Euros heled out a little.

If you're getting loads close to 100 surely you'd likely be getting good revenue too? Of course unmatched by the July sun market, but fairly reasonable?

Yes and no. If for example 40% of the plane was filled by 19.99 fares and you could earn the same revenue by only filling 12% with higher fares going to the Med in summer. Easy to see where the money is made. Then factor in higher on board sales for Med flights.

I'm sure Paris may of been somewhat profitable or no losing massively but there is just more to be made elsewhere. As I said before it needed better schedule and would of likely make more. Busy days/times make the money to support weaker flights and with BVA out of SNN it was just weaker days/times.

Berlin is one to watch especially if it doesn't have the good schedule returned next winter, may get away with it in summer.

Summer seasonal peaks loaded, Malaga now 4pw June-August (June/June last year) and Alicante now 3pw June-August (June/July last year). Majorca is now 3pw only June/July (June-August last year).

Stansted still down massively from last hear (loss of 4 rotations a week) and MAN has lost a rotation, as well as FMM and BVA cut (-4), so this is a slight makeup for one month.

SNN-JFK cancelled today and tomorrow too. I'd say that's fairly permanent damage to the route, hopefully people won't be persuaded to switch to flying to Dublin (especially tourists).

This may also be very beneficial for Delta and United.

Think so, I know FNG was out for a while due to a bird strike but I think that's back in service.
