Well, I think we all know that 20,000 ft. is uneconomical for a jet airliner but my question was why an A320 would climb to FL 380 for a cruise lasting just about 5 mins. I'd have thought it would burn a lot of fuel to climb so high, only to start it's descent after such a short period in the cruise. Hoping for some informed input from air-crew or similar.
