A sweeper would have been an insult to his game. Frank is probably the best specialist corner back we ever had. Both held their place for more than a decade in Clares greatest era.

Also, Clare played a sweeper near the end of Lohan's career. Frank in my opinion was the best back we ever had, he'd probably be well able to make it at any stage.

Don't get me wrong I think they all could have adjusted their game for the modern era but I'm just thinking of them while they played.Davy - I don't think he'd make it, his 1 trick with puck outs was to hit it as far as he could every time and he was prone to errors in big games. .

Full back is a specialist position, I don't think we have better now. To be fair, that current crop if hurlers are exceptional, but so were the 95-2005 era. One won 2 all irelands and 3 Munsters, the others have one in the era of Kilkenny's greatest.

Clareman wrote: » I'm not denying that they were great players and I will say that Davy and Frank would probably make it today, but I still think that Brian was an edge of the square full back that wasn't comfortable out the pitch and could be exposed by smaller/faster players. Put an old style full forward up against Brian Lohan and he'd dominate, have people running at him from all directions and he'd struggle.

All that was tried; I don't recall Lohan being moved out of position only once. Playing full back is hugely dependent on what's in front of you. Every hurler has someone that will get the better of them. DJ Carey had Brian Whelahan. Shelley used to trouble Lohan. I couldn't say that any of the full backs that have replaced the Lohans has equaled their performance or consistency.
